2020 MINNESOTA MULTISPORT HONORS - Later this week we will begin the process of posting nominees for this year's MMHs, which will feature two athletes--AJ MANNING (Fargo, ND) and PATRICK ALLAIRE (Marshfield, WI) that reside in border states. Since 2000, the MMH Committee has been rewarding those visiting athletes who meet the criteria for consideration, and at least nine of those talented multisporters have taken home awards, including SARAH KOLPIN (photo), who won the Rookie of the Year and Duathlete of the Year in 2005, and was ranked 1st on Team MInnesota. She is the only rookie in MMH history to captain the Team.

They are:

ROBERT GILLES, Fargo, ND - 2001 Triathlete of the Year, 2001 Duathlete of the Year, 20o1 Performance of the Year, 3 x Team MInnesota (photo below)

SARAH KOLPIN, River Falls, WI - 2005 Rookie of the Year, 2005 Duathlete of the Year, 2 x Team Minnesota....

FALL CLASSIC RACE REPORT - Race morning is always a bit of an existential crisis.

When that alarm hits at 6:00 AM on a Sunday, I begin questioning every decision which has led to this point. I was in bed by 8:00 PM last night. I binged Star Trek reruns until I fell asleep. I'm now conscious, my cat (not conscious) is draped across my face, and I'm about to voluntarily subject myself to 90 minutes of torment. Why am I doing this? Then I remember:  ...

FALL CLASSIC DUATHLON COVERAGE - Until mid-August it appeared that there would not be a 2020 tri/du season, which bummed-out the Minnesota Multisports Committee. Since 1999 they had been honoring our state's most successful atletes on an annual basis...

The final look of my 'summer of stache' was the saber tooth tiger.

...it did not gain necessary approval within the household so Kennedy chopped it after a couple days. I'm going to miss the long stares and double takes while out in public.

On Sunday I suited up one last time in 2020 to race Square Lake Sprint triathlon in Stillwater, MN. The race format has changed drastically this year to meet state guidelines around covid (no more mass starts etc) so you no longer know where your ranking is while the race is happening. It's more of a time trial vs head to head race....

Square Lake Race Report - It definitely feels good to be racing again. To jump in the water, start your watch, put your bib on, and be out there with all the other competitors. This year's Square Lake sprint tri was unlike any other year. That's a good thing though because instead of having to be canceled due to covid, it was able to be held in a special distanced style.

The weather was excellent at Square Lake Park: Overcast skies but moderate temperatures, no rain, and no sun in your eyes. The water was cool and felt great. Racers entered the water in a serialized start, approximately one person every 5 seconds. The swim was a little over 1/2 mi and then everyone transitioned in specially arranged transition zone that spaced people 6 ft apart. I've never had so much space! We were arranged alphabetically, and I racked next to my neighbor in (similar) name Dwight Larsen. He was also back to the races after having completed 40+ tris himself. I know he was also glad to be out on course again...

Wildlife Loop Half IM - Race report.

Swim: air temp around 40... water was in the 50s. Some said 50 some said mid 50s. It didn’t matter either way, it was cold.

I thought I had warmed up as adjusted. Not so. Got a migraine and asthma attack quickly. I was in pain and couldn’t breathe - usually swim is my happy place. It was not today. It was survival....
