15th BUFFALO OLYMPIC TRIATHLON - Men's Race - It's fun to watch the birth of stars. Triathlon stars, that is. Some rise to the status in just a year-or so. Examples include Heather Lendway, Ruth Brennan Morrey, David Thompson, Dan Hedgecock, Claire Bootsma, Kortney Haag.

Others take a tad longer, like two or three years. Patrick Parish , Cathy Yndestad, Matt Payne fit this profile.

And there are those that take a relatively long time. Several years. In these cases, it's pleasantly surprising when it happens, and very encouraging to ambitious athletes who have yet to make their mark.

JOSH MORK has been a triathlete for a long time, more than a decade. He was a "solid" competitor for much of that time. But in 2019 he emerged as a true star, a national class amateur triathlete...

IRONMAN TULSA RACE REPORT - A global pandemic, a work from home schedule, and age 50 on the horizon...these all seemed like perfect indicators to buckle down and do something big in 2021. I pulled myself out of long course retirement and signed up for IM Tulsa in mid-December. At the time it was the only Ironman 140.6 that had space available. What I didn't know when I pulled the trigger, is that Oklahoma is known for 25mph winds, bumpy roads, tornadoes and heat. Fortunately, most of these were not a factor on Sunday, May 23rd. In early January I hired coach Andy Scheisl, an athlete I've know for over 13 years, to get me to the start line injury free, with my main goal to build bike and swim fitness, as the run is typically my strength. I had planned on IM Tulsa being my swan song...

Highlights Galore at Apple!

SARTELL APPLE DUATHLON - While TED TREISE and DIANE HANKEE were busy leading the way, as expected, we had our eyes on age group performances, and there were plenty of highlights to share.

The day was tough. Warm. Humid, and especially, windy. Not a day for record-setting, yet Treise, a second year  pro, outsplit the men's field from timing mat to timing mat. His 1:22:00 gave him four and a half minutes to relax before runner-up / local star / Apple's amateur champion ANDY ZABEL made his PR performance here official.

Diane, who had also won here in 2016, relied on her run splits to secure her 1:26 win over another  former Apple champ, ELAINE NELSON, who is probably the fastest female pharmacist in our region...

SARTELL — The Apple Duathlon starts the summer for many racing athletes.

Andy Zabel, a Sartell native, has been competing in the running/cycling event since 2010, but missed last year, along with everyone else, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Zabel isn't the only one excited to have the race back; race director Evin Haukos was looking forward to the 39th annual Apple Duathlon. ...
