RACE REPORT - After a LONG BRUTAL winter in the pool, on the trainer, and the treadmill, many of us are antsy for the start of race season, but early races are always sketchy due to the uncertain weather here in the land of 10,000 frozen lakes. For those who don’t like to swim or don’t prefer to swim in freshly thawed lakes, May is perfect for Duathlons. If you are like me and prefer riding to running, the Central Lakes Cycle DU in Fergus Falls is a perfect way to get an early season race in. CLC has a different twist on the traditional duathlon as it is a 20 mile bike, 4 mile run and then a 7 mile bike!!

This was the 3^rd year of the event and Clark and his crew at CLC know how to put on a fun race. The Du has a time trial start with two rider leaving every 15 seconds. The first 20 mile bike leg is challenging as the first 10 miles are a series of hills with great climbs and fast descents while you head SE to Dalton then you turn back to Fergus on the Central Lakes Bike trail for a screaming fast return before a final series of climbs back to transition. USAT LONG DISTANCE DUATHLON NATIONALS - The 2014 Long Course Duathlon National Championships will take place in Cary, North Carolina next Saturday. The event, consisting of a 32-mile bike leg bracketed by 5-mile runs, will qualify American duathletes for the Zofingen (SUI) Long Course World Champs next September.

Several of Minnesota's best duathletes will be racing in Cary.

Who?

Suzy Fox, Diane Hankee, Brendon O'Flanagan and Patrick Parish. Maybe others.

Fox was the Minnesota Duathlete of the Year in 2013 and was arguably the fastest amateur female run-bike-runner in the US last season. After her mechanical DNF at Oakdale last weekend, she is anxious to race....

RACE PREVIEW - The 22nd annual Gear West Duathlon will take place in Orono next Sunday. It has always been one of the premier dus in our region and one of the most competitive run-bike-runs in the US. Is it on your racing schedule? If not, there's still time to register.

Check out the champions and their times during this millennium. You'll notice that David Thompson (7), Dan Hedgecock (3), Brooks Grossinger (2 amateur titles) and Robert Gilles (2) are multiple winners on the men's side. On the women's side, Cathy Yndestad has three victories, and 2006 ITU Duathlon World Champion (Amateur) Sarah Kolpin has two.

A Capitol idea!

capitol-ko We're not sure who has adopted whom, but Best of the U.S. and the city of Saint Paul are so happy together they've changed the race name and with great pleasure introduce the Capitol City Tri (formerly and aka Best of the U.S. Sprint). The date remains June 22, the venue is Lake Phalen.

"The sprint race will still host the BOUS Championship," said Director Trudy Marshall. "But the Sprint is for everyone, and we wanted the name to reflect that. Our goal is to create an instant classic. We're celebrating all of Minnesota's--and particularly Saint Paul's-- treasures: its incredible parks; its dynamism and energy; its diversity; people and businesses small and large coming together for fitness and recreation. We Minnesotans are so blessed! What an awesome place we have to work and play."...
