Dan W. Rocks at YWCA Finale...

As we mentioned in yesterday's post, the April 8 season finale of the YWCA INDOR TRI SERIES enjoyed a record turn-out. One hundred and fourteen athletes finished, thirty-four more than the previous attendance record.

Leading the way in the long course (600yd - 12 -5K) event, unsurprisingly, was seasoned vet DAN WESTERHAUS, whose 49:08 was a season, perhaps even an event, record. Dan is a totally cool guy who is into Skijoring with his German Shepherd, Niko. He has eclectic musical taste and loves adult cartoons, like "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons."

Taking 2nd place, also not surprisingly, is 2017 Minnesota Junior of the Year runner-up CARTER DEICHMAN, 17. Carter, a soft-spoken young man with great hair, popped a 51:20, a junior record.

Finishing 3rd in the long race was YWCA Indoor stalwart BRIAN ZAMBONI, who posted these other impressive results here: 1st on January 22, 4th on February 18, 3rd on March 18. His 53:21 on April 8 was his personal best.

The long course women were led by MARIA CHUI, who turned in a 54:09. We'd love to tell you more about her, but we were unable find anything online.

Second and third respectively in the women's long event were earned by MEG KELLEY and JENNY BREEN. Kelly won the first two YWCA Indoor Tris, though her time--54:41 on April 8, was a PR for the Series. 

Breen, 52, is an avid endurance athlete with impressive results in running, outdoor tri and nordic sking....

"Health is Wealth"

The fourth and final event of the YWCA's 2018 Indoor Triathlon Series happened on April 8. It was by far the their best-attended event ever, with 114 athletes crossing the finish line. The previous record was 80 finishers on March 18. Only one Minnesota indoor--Tri-U-Mah--draws more folks than the YWCA.

First, thanks for taking a few minutes to stop by my blog. I have had this blog for the past 8+ years, using it only occasionally as I was training for the 'next big race'...a race that never seemed to happen.
I've run/raced a lot...110 marathons, Ironman, probably nearly 700+ races in total, but over the past 5+ years, I truly have found myself searching for a race, a meaning.

I honestly thought that Leadman 2018 was going to be IT. I was excited, motivated...threw down my $855 to enter. Was training at a D+/C- level for most of the fall/winter, having limited energy to get out. Motivation, none. Always tired with an excuse. What a lazy piece of shit, I would call myself.

Ending on a "Make"...

On a typical day, my small-framed, tenaciously competitive 8-year-old son, Finn, spends his time playing hard, getting dirty, and competing as though he is in a professional combine at the Joyner household with his two best friends, Kai and Ryk. With no organized structure, it marvelously resembles old school play. Starting to play is easy. For up to 8 hours in one day, whether it’s football, basketball, hockey, or soccer, they love battling, they love keeping score, and they LOVE each other. It is a beautiful little friendship.

Finishing play is another issue.

“Finn! It’s time to go!”

“Just wait! I have to end on a make! C’mon Mom-pleeeasssse let me end on a make!”

“Ending On a Make”—a basket, a touchdown, a goal—has become a compulsion for these little boys. To appease this healthy ritual, I smile, observe, wait, and wait longer, until gradually I become impatient when Finn is having an off day, or the opposing 7-year-old goalie is producing a Saturday afternoon highlight film.  I allow him his “make” and finally, we head home....
