36th APPLE DUATHLON PREVIEW -  The Apple Du, turning 36 on May 26, is our state's oldest ongoing multisport event, and is widelly recognized as arguably the most competitive non-National-Championship run-bike-run in the US. We sometimes worry that this reputation may scare away potential entrants, especially those who have a recreational relationship with the sport, and those competitive athletes who are not in peak form this early in the season. These folks need to know that Apple is for everyone. It is first and foremost a celebration of healthy lifestyles, and the high quality of life we enjoy as Minnesotan tri-and-du-athletes.

Sure, MTN likes to focus much of its editorial on the competitive aspects of the sport, and we will be posting such a preview in the coming days. Today, though, we are focusing on this year's age group (AG) event. Because we enjoy progosticating, we are going to share our picks to win the non-open-class (Open Class = 20-39) AGs next Saturday in Sartell. These picks are based on the May 17 registration list on Apple's website. We fully expect an influx of talented age groupers since then, which will adjust the selections. For instance, if Derek Hager were to register late, as he did in 2017, he would be our new pick to win the 55-59M division....

So, April was in like a lion – two snowstorms! – and out like a lamb. Temps finally hit 80F on Monday, and wowza! I forgot what warm sunshine felt like on bare skin. #sunshinegivesmelife

Here are last month’s highlights.

1 – all the biking

With 24 days in the saddle, April was the month of the bike. The workouts weren’t long – no more than 80 minutes – but wowza… did they pack a punch, especially because of the compounding fatigue.

While many ended with me near puking and cursing coach, many also ended with me thinking, damn, I can’t believe I hit those watts – or, these watts cannot be real. Case in point: the first workout in the block that I read completely wrong. There’s a big difference between 30 seconds rest and four minutes + 30 seconds rest! ...

What Was I Thinking?

What was I thinking?

TEXAS IRONMAN RACE REPORT - I’ve done Ironman Wisconsin 4 times, but in 2018 my niece is getting married over Ironman Wisconsin weekend so I had to look for an alternative. By the power of cell-phone technology, my wife registered me for Ironman Texas on an impulse. I thought sure… great idea. Good time of year. The farming won’t have started yet and the construction projects should be slow yet. I was feeling good until I joined the Ironman Texas Facebook group. Every post was about water temps, wet-suit legal, snakes, and alligators. Great. What was I thinking...

Fast forwarding past the months of training, figuring out bike shipments, nutrition, injuries from helping my son move his couch to the basement, and deciding what to pack – we arrived to Texas on Wednesday night, 3 days before Ironman. What was I thinking…

Day 1: Thursday, April 26, 2018

Left Minnesota in sub 40 degree temperatures. Arrive in Texas to above 80 degree temperatures. I walked for too many miles in the heat to try and adjust and got sunburn on my face, neck, arms, and ears. I’m always asking for directions. My wife is using Uber for the first time for our transportation. What was I thinking…

The University of Minnesota Triathlon team competed at the 2018 Collegiate National Championships last weekend (April 27th-28th) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. High rains led to strong currents, and so all races were changed into duathlon format....
