Big-Ass Bouncy Houses & Pseudo-Consistent Splits...

Yesterday (Ed. February 10) was my first race of 2019: the Minneapolis YWCA Indoor Triathlon. I had signed up for the longest distance: 600 yard swim (in a 25 yard pool), 8 "miles" on a spin bike (NEW bikes where resistance matters!), and a 5K on a 200 yard track (25 laps).

The evening before, we went out to my wife's aunt's house for a skating/taco party. I ate lots of crap, and the boys played out on the ice even though it was -2 with -15 windchill.

The ONLY (and tiniest) bit of pre-race drama took place regarding my goggles. After getting back from Mexico, they started leaking a bit. On Friday's swim, they were just gushing water. I think the little "tabs" that hold the goggle straps as tight as you set it got loose from me playing around with them as I kept loosening/tightening them while playing in the pool in Mexico. They don't hold them as tight as I'd like anymore. And being I still felt like these goggles were "new," I didn't have a back-up pair. So I ...

Stenzel Strikes Again!

Photo - This pic of Sookie's nails (Sookie is the YWCA's Indoor Tris race director) has nothing to do with this story. It's posted because we think it's cool, and we were unable to get a shot from the race.

YWCA INDOOR TRI #2 - Usual suspects galore, plus enough adventurous newbies, conspired  to push attendance to record levels. This event had 79 finishers in 2018. Very good numbers, eh? Last Sunday, 92 athletes went the distance. Very cool.

Glancing at the results, several things stood out, most notably that masters and grand masters rocked most of the top spots. How cool is it that 61-year-old NICK KOSZEWSKI, pronounced "Koz -shef -ski," we think, won the Sprint race? We tried to find stuff about Nick on the Inter Web and didn't find much, unless he's a biomedical scientist at Iowa State University. If so, he's incredibly accomplished, looks decades younger than his real age, has great hair and speaks German.

Another sixty-genarian, RICHARD DANAHER, turned in the fastest men's time in the Mini, which placed him 4th overall in that event. He finished 5th overall/4th male in last year's February Mini....

Life Time Eagan Indoor Tri Race Report - A couple of weeks ago, Lifetime Fitness held their series of indoor triathlons. I was able to participate in the event at their Eagan club. As this was my 5th year participating, I was pretty well aware of what to expect. 10 minutes of swimming followed by 30 minutes of biking on the spin bike and ending with 20 minutes of running on the treadmill. This event really has a special place in my heart as a few friends and I do the event together and grab brunch afterwards. A sweet little reward after 70 minutes of hard work.

I was really looking forward to this year’s indoor tri to see if my Ironman training has made an impact on my results. I knew I wasn’t going to go my normal pace on the run due to my nagging knee injury but had set some aggressive (for me) goals on the swim (goal – 23 lengths) and bike (goal – 11.3 miles)....

LIFE TIME FITNESS EAGAN INDOOR TRI - DAVID LABNO did not compete at the LTF Lakeville Winter Indoor on January 20, an event he's won at least four times. But he did do the Eagan event on the 27th, and yes, he finished, thanks to his superior swim and bike splits, atop the leaderboard. However, he was joined there by BRIAN SHOEMAKER, who posted impressive splits throughout, and former collegiate runner RILEY HUFFMAN.

All three men amassed 210 points.

We scoured the web in search of interesting info on the men's co-winners, and didn't find much. We did see a cool pic of Brian Shoemaker with his Cervelo R3. He's a good looking guy who parts his hair on the left. We're not sure, but think that Dave Labno is into historical bottles and yummilicious confections from Sweet Treasures (Cakes, Cupcakes & More!) in Lakeville.

We did find some cool stuff about Riley Huffman. On at least one occasion, he dyed his beard white so he would look like Santa (photo). He's a Wisconsinonian, thus he likes the Packers better than the Vikes. He is also into "guy" humor, you know, movies starring Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Zach Galifianakis, and TV shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy...

Hi MTN Guys!

Glad we got in touch with each other. This was the 3rd Indoor Tri that I put on at Chanhassen and each time it gets a little better. I really enjoy seeing people give Triathlon a go. My favorite sales pitch to get people registered is "you can walk the swim!"

I emailed a few people to ask them for a blurb about their experience. I was hoping to get something from Julie Ewasiuk (2nd place masters) and Emily Williams (1st place open) as they're members of my Tri TEAM class, but I guess they like to ignore their coach when he tells them to do homework. Very proud of them both. This was Emily's first tri of any kind and she'll soon be out in the real outside triathlon world.

I also asked Jenelle (1st place masters) for a short write up, she was someone I got a chance to meet that weekend. Looks like she decided to attack the write up like she did the Tri that weekend. I've pasted it below.

There's a chance we'll do this again in March and I'll be sure to let you know. I'm trying my best to grow the Tri community out at Chanhassen and have a class specifically for Tri training that meets mornings and noon, MWF. Hoping to have a lot of fun this year. ...

Intrepid Guys. Fearless Women...

LIFE TIME FITNESS WINTER INDOOR TRIATHLON - CHANHASSEN -  Eighty-two athletes finished the Chan. Indoor on January 20. The men were led by veteran indoor triathlete KYLE MOONEY, whose previous best finish had been a 3rd at Maple Grove in 2015. His margin of victory over 2nd placer KENNETH DOWNER was six points.

Rooney appears to be an intrepid guy. Info on his FB page suggests he's done New Mexico's arduous Mount Taylor Winter Quadrathlon, which consists of a 13-mile bike (1800 foot climb), five mile run (1200 foot climb), two mile uphill XC ski (1200 foot climb), followed by a 1-plus mile snowshoe run to the 11,301-foot summit (600 foot climb), then turn around and snowshoe, ski, run and bike down to the finish line. He may also have hiked to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. His "Likes" include Jimmy Buffett's music and TV lampoonist Daniel Tosh.

A glance at Kenneth's FB page suggests that he's a totally intrepid guy, too. Very athletic and outdoorsy. A transplanted easterner, he owns some very solid triathlon results, especially in the long stuff.
