SARTELL — The Apple Duathlon starts the summer for many racing athletes.

Andy Zabel, a Sartell native, has been competing in the running/cycling event since 2010, but missed last year, along with everyone else, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Zabel isn't the only one excited to have the race back; race director Evin Haukos was looking forward to the 39th annual Apple Duathlon. ...

"It's great to see everyone back on the course and competing once again," Haukos said. "It was sad to see everything being canceled last year, so there was a lot of excitement today."applediane.jpg

Zabel competed in the elite group on Saturday and finished second overall on the long course - a 5K run, 33K bike route and another 5K run. He recorded a time of 1:26:30, which was just behind the first-place finisher, Ted Treise, with a time of 1:22:00.

This year was special for Zabel because his son, Hudson Zabel, competed in the short-course race, which consists of a 5K run followed by a 15.5K bike ride and another short run. He finished third for the men with a time of 55:31.
