Race Coverage - Sean and Jake turned in impressive efforts at the 2011 Waseca 1/3 IM. North Dakota's amiable Cooley boys placed 3rd and 6th in that race, which was made all the more challenging by vaporous Amazonian heat. Sean's time was 2:51:45; Jake's 2:58:17.
Last Sunday, Sean collected his 3rd career victory on Minnesota soil, winning Waseca VI, which was contested under much more hospitable conditions (60s, cloudy, intermittent mist), with a time nearly nine minutes faster than a year ago (2:42:54). Only last year's Best of the US National Champion Matt Payne (2:37:29 in 2011), Dan Cohen (2:38:25 in 2009) and 2009 US Duathlete of the Year Kevin O'Connor (2:42:37) have negotiated the 1-mile -37 mile - 8.8-mile route in brisker times....

Chase the Police Triathlon - A clear summer sunrise on vast Leech Lake can make you wonder if a more beautiful place is even possible. And it is on the western shore of Walker Bay, a portion of Leech that dwarfs most of Minnesota's signature 10,000+, that he Chase the Police Triathlon begins and ends.
The unique format allows not only cops, but fire fighters and past and present military personnel, to launch in the first wave, thus allowing the non-protectors and servers to chase them down. It's a cool deal....

Chisago Lakes Half Iron Recap:
By Dan Hedgecock (danhedgecock.blogspot.com)
Monday, July 23
The race yesterday at Chisago was very long, and I got lucky again this year with mild temperatures and cloud cover for most of the race. Gloria West is the race director, and through Midwest Sports Events puts on a full line of triathlons and running races throughout the year. As a poor person I think I really appreciate Gloria's race because it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. I was looking into doing the Boulder 70.3 race around this time, but just couldn't stomach the almost $300 entry fee. This weekend I got to race a full half with all the support I could need...

WASECA 1/3 & SPRINT IV - Diane Hankee was totally awesome on this dank, cool morning in friendly Waseca. So were the brothers Cooley, Sean and Jake. And John Heinlein III. And Enoch Elliot (photo L). And Beth Guck. And Tammy O'Connor. And a guy who promised himself years ago that if he ever won his division in a triathlon, he'd quit the sport and learn how to speak "Ta'izzi-Adeni," the Arabic dialect spoken by most of the people in Yemen, and at least six guys in the United Arab Emirates. His name is Rick Gauger; he lives in Waseca; and we may have embellished the part about his desire to speak Yemeni Arabic. Rick is rethinking his promise and may, henceforth, dispense with promising altogether. There's no way he is going to give up triathlon. Especially now that he has rocked an AG win in his own backyard and the guys at PJ's Tavern on South State Street said that they ...

HOOT LAKE TRIATHLON- 192 guys and gals crossed the finish line of the umpteenth annual Hoot Lake Triathlon in Fungus Falls this morning. Okay, it's actually "Fergus Falls," but Angie Hop, who won there last year but did Waseca 1/3 instead this season (and rocked!), prefers it's affectionate eukaryotic sobriquet.
The event was won by Ryan Deyounge of Worthington, who may or may not be the drummer for Christian rock band "Mainstay," who supposedly sound a little like the "Goo Goo Dolls," and Missy Heilman (photo L), who likes red cocktails, "Daughtry" (Who doesn't?) and "The Biggest Loser." According to runner-up Cindy Schlafmann, a world....
