A Long Day in the Desert...Updated..Again...

Ironman Arizona Coverage -

Due to immensely frustrating site problems we we unable to post pictures and much of the content. We'll update on Tuesday.

4:00 PM - It's a 9:04:49 debut for Palmer! Devon finished 17th overall. Congrats Devon on turning in the all-time fastest rookie IM effort by a Minnesotan! Very, very cool!

3:39 PM - Hey, where's Devon? We'll try to find him and get back to you.

3:30 PM - Chrissie's 11th IM win here today took the "Official," i.e. M-dot, world record down from 8:47:26 (Sandra Wallenhorst at Ironman Austria in 2008) to 8:36:13. T'was Wellington's fifth sub-9 and lowered Arizona's women's CR by 33:06. Chrissie finished 8th overall on this damp Sonoran day.

3:00 PM - Germany's Timo Bracht has just rewritten the men's CR at Ironman Arizona. His sizzling 8:07:16 dispassionately gouged more than six minutes out of Jordan Rapp's prior race best. Bracht placed 6th at Kona last month.

2:23 PM - Two Minnesotans are in the amateur women's Top 10 after the first two legs. Jenny Wilcox is in 8th place; Julie Hull is in 2nd just 4 SECONDS behind amateur leader Karleen Dirmantas of Phoenix. Only eight pros are currently ahead of Hull and Dirmantas. How cool is that! Wilcox, a strong runner, was 10 minutes behind Hull when she got off the bike. Both Minnesota girls are on PR pace. Julie's prior best in 10:32:12, set at Ironman Florida in 2008. Jenny's PB is an 11:12 (Wisconsin '09).

Cotton Candy Nerves...

bonnieBy Bonnie Siegel

When I was released from the ICU and cleared to go down to the regular part of the hospital, I asked the nurse if I could walk there instead of laying on the gurney. With guarded approval, the staff watched as I gingerly got out of my hospital bed and slowly made my way to the elevator, two IV's and a heart rate monitor in my wake. When I arrived on the 5th floor the welcoming nurses said they had never seen anyone walk down from ICU.

"Triathletes tri harder." I said with a smile.

As triathletes we push ourselves harder than 99% of the general population. We swim in lakes that harbor Lochness monsters ...

Keeping Her Mojo Going...

jennyMTN asked Jenny Wilcox to comment on her goals and prep for this weekend's Ironman Arizona. She sent us these words:

By Jenny Wilcox

Finishing the tri season here in MN in September was a great ending, to a new beginning. I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me going into the fall season. Days were shorter and cooler, but thankfully we had a such a nice fall for Ironman training.

Deep down it was hard to keep my mojo going when I knew almost all of my friends were finished with their seasons, sometimes wishing I was done too. However, I kept going and trained hard with several long bricks and a few centuries mixed in. It was a balance of time between training, family and my job which had just went full time and was the busiest month of my life! October was a complete blur, between long days of training,..

Wonderful Baby Stuff...

Newborn KaiaThe lovely Maria Vu Wieneke, wife of MTN's Darin Wieneke gave birth to the couple's first child on Tuesday morning. Daughter Kaia, all 21" and 7' 14 oz. of her, and mom are doing splendidly. Unlike Jenny Sartain, whose difficult labor lasted almost two weeks, Maria barely had time to don her fashionable backless gown and lay down before Kaia transitioned from "in there" to "out here."

Maria is obviously not the over-protective type. Note that she is already allowing her newborn to play with scissors....
