Made to be Broken...UPDATED...

cincoRace Coverage - Records, like taco shells, are made to be broken.

Sam Janicki ran like a banshee (pronounced "Banchy") on Saturday at the 4th annual Cinco Du Mayo Duathlon. In fact, he ran like a banshee twice. And betwixt those banshee-esque pedestrian segments, he rode like an banshee; maybe even banshee-er than either run. The result was a 12:44 lowering of Dereck Podratz's race record and the 8th victory of his impressive young career. In Podratz' defense, though, his CR was set under conditions that can best be described as frosty with Edmund Fitzgerald-sinking winds....

Michelle* 9th annual CHAIN OF LAKES TRIATHLON - East Gull Lake's Michelle Andres (photo) crushed the women's course record this morning, lopping 2:50 off Jen Lenarz's 2009 mark. Lenarz placed 3rd today. Finishing between Andres, who now has eight career multipsort wins, and three-time COLT champ (Lenarz), was the outrageously cool Angie Hop, 40, who's 1:05:15 trashed the women's masters CR and was like a gazillion minutes faster than her 2010 time. Helping A Do-Gooder Do More Good Stuff...

By Your Side

With triathlon season at our feet, it is appropriate to consider the season's race goals and steps to achieve them. For 23 year-old Macalester College student, Terence Steinberg, that goal is clear: train smart, race hard at Ironman Wisconsin, and qualify for Kona. In his first Ironman in Louisville last August, he placed 136th overall, and missed his age group's roll-down by one slot. This year he hopes the outcome will be better. But as spring rolls into summer, Terence isn't focused on training. Instead, he's preparing to lead a team of EMTs, paramedics and firefighters in an innovative project called A Tu Lado. This June and July, he and his partners will train emergency medical responders to raise the bar of pre-hospital care in Caracas, Venezuela. A Tu Lado will not only empower the population to treat medical emergencies, it will also create new economic opportunities for the nation's youth. Terence says that expanding access to emergency medical education is one of his greatest draws in life, one whose significance overshadows any triathlon....

A Preview, An Update, Help Wanted & A Race Report...

catRace Preview - Record attendance will be on hand for Saturday's Take the Hill Triathlon in St. Peter, logo where, according to the city's website, "...History and Progress Meet." Cool slogan.

Formerly the Gustie Triathlon, the event reached its 150 participant enrollment ceiling and will not be accepting race-day registration. A glance at the start list has us suspecting that last week's UMM-Tinman winner, Jose Rosales-Yepez, should win easily and Micah Turman, whose wife Abby is totally preggers, and the effervescent Randy Quaid lookalike Paul Mollett should capture the remaining podium spots. Turman was expecting to race at COLT, but opted for Take the Hill because it's closer to home just in case the fetus inhabiting Abigail's tummy decides to try life on the outside. Mollett was ...
