With triathlon season at our feet, it is appropriate to consider the season's race goals and steps to achieve them. For 23 year-old Macalester College student, Terence Steinberg, that goal is clear: train smart, race hard at Ironman Wisconsin, and qualify for Kona. In his first Ironman in Louisville last August, he placed 136th overall, and missed his age group's roll-down by one slot. This year he hopes the outcome will be better. But as spring rolls into summer, Terence isn't focused on training. Instead, he's preparing to lead a team of EMTs, paramedics and firefighters in an innovative project called A Tu Lado. This June and July, he and his partners will train emergency medical responders to raise the bar of pre-hospital care in Caracas, Venezuela. A Tu Lado will not only empower the population to treat medical emergencies, it will also create new economic opportunities for the nation's youth. Terence says that expanding access to emergency medical education is one of his greatest draws in life, one whose significance overshadows any triathlon....
His team of college students has raised $7,500 to fund their work. They need another $2,500 to make their EMT course fully affordable to the local population. Here is an excerpt from a letter I received from Terence in April. It highlights his project and explains how you can help.
