How to Destroy Your Kid's Athletic Future...

sully.gifBy Matt Russ (sportfactoryproshop.com)

In over two decades of coaching athletes I have had the pleasure of seeing some of my junior athletes make it all the way to the professional level.  Along the way I have developed a somewhat global perspective on what it takes to go from this point A to the very distant point B.  I worked with some wonderful parents that contributed greatly to their child's successes.  But I unfortunately witnessed more parents, sometime unwittingly and always with the best intentions, sabotage their child's athletic future.  If they had just heeded a few simple rules, or examined a few of their motives, not only would their child been a better athlete, they would have been a better competitor, happier, and healthier child.

If you are find yourself excited at the potential of your child's athletic career, I invite you take an objective look within.  And if you catch yourself doing any of the three following things, I can all but guarantee your child will not end up where you believe they will....

"Not What I Had Hoped For..."

Buenos Aires 70.3 Race Report - Patrick and I took the ten hour overnight flight to Buenos Aires on Wednesday night.  My goal for the flight there was to get as much sleep as possible so I could stay on a somewhat normal schedule.  While sleeping sitting up is highly uncomfortable I was able to get at least six hours of sleep I suspect.  Upon arriving in Buenos Aires I found another athlete, Greg, from my flight also anxiously awaiting the arrival of their bike on the luggage carousel.  We got to chatting and discovered (thanks to the fact that I was wearing my Macalester Water Polo t-shirt) that his wife (Nicole)  was also a Macalester graduate, she was coming later in the week to watch the race. ...

INDIA EIGHTYTWO.  That was the name given me by the EMT and put on my wristband prior to me being loaded on the ambulance following my bicycle accident.  At 30+mph a small rub on the rear wheel of the rider in front of me in the pace line and things changed forever.  Never, Never, Never cross wheels in a group ride.  After 40 years of competitive bike riding I made one mistake, and there is no do-over, and it really hurts both physically and mentally.

Broken Scapula, broken hip, broken ribs, collapsed lung, torn rotator cuff, huge hematoma, toe to head road rash.  All on the left side.  As a...

Cool News From Duluth...

BB-bike.gifSNEAKY GUY - Unbeknownst to most of his Minnesota peers, BRIAN BICH snuck off to Florida last November, where in addition to watching his seventies-genarian dad play fantasy baseball, he raced at the Miamiman Half Ironman. He finished 3rd overall behind two pros, making him the overall amateur champion. Not bad for a 49-year-old.

Via email, BB had this to say: The race was hot and wet and the swim was long but the race was very fun. Nice to race where nobody knew who I was. I raced very conservatively and felt great all day long!

According to our records, the victory was (at least) #46 of Bich's storied multisport career.Forty two of those wins were recorded after the millennial turn, making him the winningest Minnesota amateur male in this century.

Other competitive milestones include eight MMAs (with nine, only Tony Schiller has more awards among Minnesota's men), three USAT AOY HMs, 2008 US Master of the Year (several HMs, too)....

HL-face.gifANOTHER TOP 5! - 2015 US Elite Rookie of the Year, HEATHER LENDWAY, continues to impress. Yesterday, the St. Paul resident placed 4th at Buenos Aires 70.3. Her time was 4:24:06 and featured the fastest women's swim split and the third fastest bike.

The women's race was won in breakout fashion by second-year British pro, Kimberley Morrison, who was the overall female European amatuer champion in 2014. Keeping HL off the podium was sneaky come-from-behind bronze medalist Ariane Monticeli of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who, like Morrison, turned in her best professional effort to date. Monticeli's run split (1:22) was almost seven minutes faster than her gender's next best split. ...
