Who is the most avuncular race director in Minnesota?
It's Randy Fulton, of course. In fact, we call him Uncle Randy. He calls us something, too.
In a recent email, Randy told us that registration for the Oakdale Duathlon on May 11 is rockin'. Approximately 400 run-bike-runners have already signed up. A dozen of those folks are entered in the "Elite" category, including 2012 champ / women's CR-holder Suzie Fox, and at least a dozen others who have elite creds but are enrolled in the AGs. This year's race will not only be larger than in year's past, it should be even more competitive,too....

ICEMAN TRIATHLON IV - There are lots of great reasons to do the Iceman Winter Triathlon next Saturday. Here are but a few:
* It's in Grand Forks, North Dakota, which is only 5-5 1/2 hours from The Cities (closer from other places!). Grand Forks is a really cool college town and the motels there are generally inexpensive.
* The event consists of classic XC skiing (skis can be rented for $5), mountain biking (bring your Fattie!) and running, after which you take a sled--or a saucer, or one of those plastic things that look like a miniature rowboat--to the top of a hill and slide down to the finish line. Cool beans, huh! ...

It's late January in Minnesota, so it's time to start thinking about early season duathlons.
Below is a list of 5 great local duathlons either in the Twin Cities Metro area or just a short drive away. I've raced all of them numerous times (16 total races among these 5 races), so here are my 2 cents on these upcoming duathlons.
- Falls Duathlon, Cannon Falls, MN. Saturday April 27, 9 a.m. 2 mile run, 14 mile bike, 3 mile run. $45 through 2/28/13.
The Falls Duathlon is put on by Final Stretch, and they host professional yet low-key races. They tend to be great for beginners if you don't want to be intimidated and overwhelmed. That being said, they're good races for all abilities. ...

"Some have complained about the bumpy roads at Brewhouse, while others were bummed about there being no Brewhouse beer at the finish. Those issues have been addressed. Check out the changes and upgrades to this iconic northern Minnesota triathlon." - Rod Raymond

NORTHWOODS IS FULL - In case you haven't heard, the 2013 Northwoods Triathlon in Nevis has filled, doing so in a ridiculously brisk 90 minutes. This is the third, perhaps fourth, year in a row that the NWT has been our state's fastest filling multisport event. In the future, make sure you visit the race's website so that you know precisely when registration opens.
Congratulations to the producers of this great Tri Minnesota Series race. They are sooooooooo doing something right.
LAKE MINNETONKA ALMOST FULL - We talked to Lake Minnetonka Triathlon director Ross Rogney yesterday. He's a great guy, you know! Well, Ross informed us that his race, which won the Race of the Year award in 2009, has less than 75 spots remaining. Act quickly, 'cuz they will be snatched up soon. Once those slots are full, Ross will open 50 Charity Slots, which cost a lot of money, all or most of which will benefit a designated charity. WEBSITE (More stuff on next page)

Iceman Run Extreme 5k...January 12, 2013
Jerry's up for the challenge, are you?

When I started the Graniteman Triathlon in Central Minnesota 10 years ago, I never dreamed that it would lead to managing an event like Iceman. Patterned after our summer Mudman Race, the Iceman Run, at Daytona Golf Club in Dayton, MN, is a perfect mix of wintery obstacles and hard core trail running. Daytona Golf Club is on the north side of the Twin Cities and has a huge indoor area to keep warm before and after the race.
