HOLT XXIX...

HEART OF THE LAKES XXIX - Dan Hedgecock and Matthew Payne went 1-2 at Duathlon Nationals on Saturday in St. Paul, and despite the requisite fatigue and sore muscles, they finished first/second again on Sunday at the Heart of the Lakes / Minnesota State Triathlon Championships.

Interestingly, both men are considered champions, Dan, a pro, for finishing 1st, and Matt, for winning the amateur title.

Hedge an M-Payne overtook eventual bronze medalist Marcus Stromberg during the bike portion, but Marcus did let them out of his sight. In the end, only thirty-six seconds separated him from Payne. In five starts this season, Stromberg has never missed the podium. More impressively, four of those events--Best of the US, Life Time - Minneapolis, HOLT and Buffalo Olympic--had national-level men's fields. Marcus has truly proven that he can bark with the big dogs, and we're anxious to see how he fares at Nationals next month....

"...My Best Olympic Race to Date"....

hl-trans.gifBy Heather Lendway (heatherlendway.com)

Life Time Tri - Minneapolis Race Report - The entire week leading into this race excitement and nerves were building. This race was going to be the biggest race to date for me this season because of a highly competitive elite amateur field and there would be a pro field racing, Saturday couldn’t arrive soon enough.

Saturday morning my alarms went off at 3:45, 3:50, and 3:55, I was up with the first alarm but always set back ups. Dad was at the house to pick me up at 4:10, I was happy to walk out of the house onto a dry sidewalk instead of torrential flooding downpours like last year....

Steve & Matt Lead the Way...

steve-and-matt.gifLIFE TIME TRI - MINNEAPOLIS - Amateur Men - At least two of the Top 3 amateur women at Saturday’s Life Time Tri - Minneapolis—Heather Lendway and Dani Fischer-- appear doomed of receive USAT Athlete of the Year nominations when the dust of the 2014 season settles.

The same is true for the Top 2 men at Minneapolis. Winner Steve Mantell of Fort Collins, Colorado, and runner-up Matthew Payne (photo L) of Columbia Heights, Minnesota seem destined for post-season recognition.

Payne came into Saturday’s race with an unblemished record: undefeated in six starts. Mantell came into the event with only one non-victorious effort on his scorecard, his 3rd place finish at USAT Collegiate Sprint Nationals. It should be noted, however, that that performance happened the day after he won the amateur title at Collegiate Olympic Nationals.

Mantell’s 2014 amateur wins at Escape from Alcatraz and Boulder 70.3 (3:58) are the stuff that make USAT AOY Selectors drool. Add his victorious amateur efforts at...

Rhapsodic Waxing...

lodge.gif(Pam Garrettson photo - Sugar Lake Lodge)

30th TIMBERMAN - Few places that host triathlons are so compelling that visitors actually consider relocating there. (Yes, it's an awkward and poorly written sentence, but the sentiment is what's important here.)

Bend, Oregon comes to mind as such a place, as does Lake Winnepesaukee, New Hampshire.

The list of these halcyon locales is not a long one, and it includes a very special place in northern Minnesota.

Most of those who make the annual pilgrimage to Ruttger's Resort on Sugar Lake for the Timberman Triathlon leave grudgingly. They wish that they could stay forever, but their lives dictate otherwise....
