14th MPLS TRIATHLON - The Men - Wisconsin's Mark Harms registered the day before the race. On paper, that meant that Matt Payne was no longer the clear-cut favorite to win the men's competition. His status would have to be downgraded to "prohibitive" favorite.
Why?
Because Mark was runner-up at Nationals last year and is a six-time AG national champion. He's been on the Elite Amateur podium at Mpls before and won the race back in 2007. The guy is freakin' good.
But can anyone beat Payne this year? Good question. The dude was, after all, 5-for-5 coming into Saturday's race. If Mark couldn't take him down, then maybe no one, even reigning national champ Steve Mantell, who won the 2014 edition of the Minneapolis Tri, can. We suspect that all three of these guys will face off at Nationals next month. We can't wait for that one....

GRANITEMAN -CLEARWATER – Melissa Klocker crossed the finish line and when the hugs started with friends and family, there were some screams of joy and even a few tears.
Klocker, 38, completed her first triathlon Saturday at Warner Park at the Clearwater Graniteman Triathlon. Klocker is a medical assistant and surgical coordinator for Central Minnesota Retina Specialists and lives in Cold Spring with her husband, Michael, and has three daughters.
There was a triathlon clinic and group swim held Tuesday at Warner Lake. Klocker, who has asthma and allergies, was fearful that she would not be able to complete the swim once she got her face in the lake water.
Bill Corcoran, the owner and general manager of Graniteman Events, Inc., was one of two people who did the pre-race swim with Klocker....

How it Started
ZTRI RACE REPORT - It all started last year, around midnight over a summertime bonfire, it is common knowledge our best decisions occur at midnight over a neighborhood bonfire, our conversation shifted towards triathlon and my friend, Brad who had never ran a 1k was adamant he was going to race a triathlon. After perusing the handy dandy race calendar on MN Tri News website we decided the Ztri was a perfect event…small, up north during the holiday weekend, ends with a Zorbaz at the finish line. My friend Brad completed his first triathlon last year at Ztri, had a blast, did something he never thought he’d do and is working towards doing more this year.
This year, Andy Zabel and I came back to Ztri and we didn’t leave disappointed. This is a great event for the weekend warrior or up north vacationer looking for a great race to kick off the 4th. of July festivities. Uncle Randy offers a a cool, unintimidating vibe, no one takes themselves too seriously and everyone is there for some fun and exercise...

UPDATE: Conditions were brutal today (temps in the 90s), still Ruth Brennan Morrey raced to a 5th-place finish at the European Ironman Championships in Frankfort, Germany today, for which she earned $5000. (Euros?) Her time was 9:21:09. RESULTS

The inaugural race of the Rip Roar kids’ triathlon series is in the books, and it was an amazing weekend of kids racing in Mankato, Mn. With Hyvee shuttering the Hyvee kids triathlon series, race director Michael Zimmerman was looking to fill the void in the upper Midwest with a kids specific tri series that will rival Hyvee’s former series. As it should be, he is the former director of the Hyvee series, and he saw the loss of the series as a real blow to kids triathlons, and an opportunity for him to shape the series.
With three more races in the series (Omaha; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Des Moines, Iowa), young athletes looking to participate in a very professionally run series with great competition will ...

LAKE WACONIA TRIATHLON - Who said that triathlon wasn't a spectator sport? We think it was a guy named Larry.
Larry was wrong. Triathlon, while not the same kind of viewing experience that you have when you watch a stadium sport or sports on TV, has thrilling moments that more than make up for those periods when all the athletes are in the hinterlands, out of sight though not necessarily out of mind.
The 26th edition of the Lake Waconia Triathlon, which in our humble opinion is and has been a nearly perfect sprint race, happened last Sunday and it was chock full of exciting moments, spectator moments.
Perhaps the most entertaining of these moments happened when Northfield's Brian Porter was hammering toward the final 90-degree turn that led to, as the great Phil Liggett would say, The Finishing Line. On autopilot, Brian overshot the turn and was headed into the transition area when spectators alerted him to his boo-boo. Regaining consciousness, Brian turned around and headed back toward the finishing line. He made a hard left at the fencing, which he soon learned marked the outside, not the inside, of the finish corridor. Instead of backtracking yet again, he lept over the fence (photo) then stumbled toward the timing mat, which he rolled over. It was soooo cool to watch and the spectators LOVED IT. ...

11th AVERAGE JO TRIATHLON - Casey Miller picked up his 6th career win in Perham last Saturday at the 11th annual Average Jo Triathlon. A Rookie fo the Year nominee in 2013, the year he placed 2nd here, Casey also won this race in 2014. That year he covered the .3-12-4 course 2:01 ahead of runner-up Branden Scheel of Fargo. This year's margin was smaller (1:12) and required that he significantly outsplit eventual 2nd placer Ryan Wippler, who won his first career multi at Lakes to Pines on June 13. 2013 winner Tyler Zima (Fargo) took 3rd with Scheel, a perennial top fiver...
