As I mentioned in my last post, I needed some time to reflect and evaluate what activities and goals to set for 2014 that will acknowledge that my knees are going to prevent me from doing what my mind wants them to do. Growing old gracefully is not in my makeup as it probably is not in yours either. While the recommended treatments for rheumatoid arthritis is to lose weight and exercise, I already meet those recommendations. Unfortunately running is not included in their recommend exercises....

For 24 years, founder Tom Konrardy and cohort Marvin Denzer produced one of the most-beloved of many treasured races in Minnesota, the Lake Waconia Triathlon. Together with their spouses, families, friends and what often seemed like the entire town of Waconia volunteering, they poured heart and soul into producing a magical event--professional, personal, warm and supportive from the first splash into the gorgeous lake, up and down Cemetery Hill and back to a warm congratulations and handshake at the end of the finish chute.

The medical tent at any iron-distance race is a fascinating place. It’s packed with athletes, some who have crashed on the bike or otherwise sustained injuries, and others who suffer from overexertion and all variety of associated issues. But what of the nonphysical ailments that afflict long-course triathletes? Beyond the walls of the medical tent lie far more fascinating phenomena, mostly psychological in nature. I’m talking obsessive-compulsive disorder, overwrought imagination, borderline insanity and all range of other psychoses....

2013 FAVORITES - The Bike
Florida turned out to be triathlon's speedway as Andrew Starykowicz lowered his Ironman distance bike split record there to within 2:17 of the 4 hour barrier while Yvonne Van Vlerken post the best women's Ironman bike split of 2013 with a 4:35:49 mark. Crashes threatened Camilla Pedersen's life, concussed Meredith Kessler and sidelined Richie Cunningham for a critical part of the season. An improving Mirinda Carfrae finally broke 5 hours on the bike at Kona - a critical element in her race-smashing overall performance. And thankfully thousands of triathletes came back healthy...
