Records Fall at New Bri...

ED. Just got back from Buffalo. Awesome event! Too pooped to write today. Will post Buffalo coverage on Tuesday and Pigman on Wednesday.

Buffalo-  RESULTS - Pigman -  RESULTS

NEW BRI TRI - BRIAN SAMES and NICOLE HEINiNGER (photo) demonstrated mid-season fitness yesterday at the 11th edition of the New Nri Tri. Not only did they score wins for their respective genders, they both set course records.

Heiney was especially impressive. In fact, her effort may have been one of her top two or three performances ever. In a race that had only seen one sub-1:10 in its history, that being Hanna Grinaker's 1:07:34 set in 2016, Nicole appeared determined to change that from the get-go. A brisk swim, followed by her signature monster bike, delivered her to T2 in 2nd place overall. Ahead of her was Sames by a slender margin of 1:33.

As Brian charged on to a time of 1:00:13, a twenty second improvement on Devon Palmer's 2015 amateur men's course best, Heiney carried a strong  pace the rest of the way. Her finish time was 1:06:06, which took a voracious bite out of Grinaker's prior CR, and landed her in 4th place overall. Not only that, her margin of victory over the second place woman was the largest in event history.

Racing conditions were favorable (clear, high 70s, breezy) and it is likely that a few divisional records were reset.

Here are yesterday's Top 5 men and women, with notes:   ...

APPLE DUATHLON - WADE CRUSER became the first St. Cloud area athlete since the mid-90s to win the Apple Duathlon, which is arguably our country's most competitive run-bike-run, with the possible exception of Du Nationals. 2016 Du Master of the Year THOMAS WOODS used the expression "pointy end" to convey that at the front of the race the fields at Apple are superior to Nationals.

It's hard to disagree with Tom.

What it took for Cruser to win yesterday were the fastest men's splits in all three segments, which resulted in a 1:21:48, the 4th fastest amateur men's time in the fourteen years that the current course had been utilized....

Sporty Wanderlusting...

Mallorca 70.3 Race Report - Travelling and exploring new cities has been delightfully routine since moving to Europe two years ago. Without knowing how long this euro adventure would last, we’ve made a pact to enjoy as much sporty wanderlust as possible. So far, it’s been a great ride!

We all race for different reasons, and after 15 years, I’m still drawn to the sport of triathlon. A movement filed lifestyle is critical for my mental and physical health, and triathlon has been the perfect therapy for me. Finding interesting race venues, while setting new race goals provides some direction and focus for my limited attention span.

With each season, and each unique race, my reasons for racing shift. Last year for example, I raced three triathlons (Rapperswil 70.3, Zug Tri, Alp D’Huez), did a few mountain runs, and spent a lot of time...

Ironman 70.3 Pan American Pro Championship, Monterrey, Mexico!

4th Overall 4:14...something.

Very talented and deep field & super important race for me to set up my season.
Swim: Started out by digging myself into a hole with a slow nonwetsuit swim in second to last place. But, the best thing one can do is have acceptance of 'what is', take a deep breath, stay task focused, and fight until the very end.
Bike: 2:18. Gradually gained time, but didn't catch anyone until the very end, making for a very lonely first 3 hours.
Run: Fastest half marathon of my life (1:18:04, 5:55/mi ave) dating back to 2001 when I ran 1:18:21 at age 23 at Grandmas half, without a swim or bike beforehand. :) At age 41, we can say things like this that we are proud of. I felt like I was floating along for 13 miles....

FALLS DUATHLON RACE REPORT - Ahhh, first race of the season done.  And with it comes a little relief!  There are usually some unknowns going into the first race in months, but there was quite a long list this time around:

* Not racing for 5 whole months(!)
* Coming back from an early January injury
* Recovering from a killer February cold and recent cranky hip
* Riding my tri bike a total of 3 times outdoors prior to race day

Not to mention a very recent coaching change!  I had two weeks of a new routine under my belt and it mostly consisted of backing off and flushing some fatigue out of my system. This would truly be a test!  ...
