OAKDALE DUATHLON RACE REPORT - If you’re offended by swearing; don’t read this. That’s the beauty of reading this one. You get a choice!!
Its 6:35am and I already know that today is going to be a great race. How do I know? I just gobbled up an entire bowl of Lucky Charms and washed it down with orange juice. This is my pre race fuel whether I’m competing in a local 5k or an Ironman. I also know I’m winning because while my kids sleep I took the last bit of that stale, marshmallowy goodness. I know, I’m an asshole. Don’t worry you’re not the only one who thinks that. Plus, the early bird gets the worm, right? Don’t worry I left Cherrios for them.
With my bike and transition bag in tow I make my way to Oakdale Minnesota to race in the Oakdale Spring Classic duathlon. I’ve done this race many times but for the last 2 years I have managed to walk away with a first place AG award. It would be nice to make it 3 years but I guess we will see.
I get to the venue and my best bud Marc is already there in standard early fashion as he is usually the first to appear at these races. We set up our transition areas, take our bikes for a spin and talk about other upcoming races with other athletes. I look around; the women here look fast. Really fast. And we all know what fast women look like. They wear the Gear West kit.
Everyone lines up for the mass start. My favorite part of the race. Everyone’s “omg I’m so caffeinated” pee face is on. (It’s not a race face, its a nervous pee face.) Star Spangled Banner is sung perfectly and we are off! And the sea of red and black fast kits start to...

OAKDALE DUATHLON XVII - Lots of folks are lamenting the decline in event attendance that the multisports world has been experiencing over the last half dozen years. And rightly so.

What was I thinking?
TEXAS IRONMAN RACE REPORT - I’ve done Ironman Wisconsin 4 times, but in 2018 my niece is getting married over Ironman Wisconsin weekend so I had to look for an alternative. By the power of cell-phone technology, my wife registered me for Ironman Texas on an impulse. I thought sure… great idea. Good time of year. The farming won’t have started yet and the construction projects should be slow yet. I was feeling good until I joined the Ironman Texas Facebook group. Every post was about water temps, wet-suit legal, snakes, and alligators. Great. What was I thinking...
Fast forwarding past the months of training, figuring out bike shipments, nutrition, injuries from helping my son move his couch to the basement, and deciding what to pack – we arrived to Texas on Wednesday night, 3 days before Ironman. What was I thinking…
Day 1: Thursday, April 26, 2018
Left Minnesota in sub 40 degree temperatures. Arrive in Texas to above 80 degree temperatures. I walked for too many miles in the heat to try and adjust and got sunburn on my face, neck, arms, and ears. I’m always asking for directions. My wife is using Uber for the first time for our transportation. What was I thinking…

The University of Minnesota Triathlon team competed at the 2018 Collegiate National Championships last weekend (April 27th-28th) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. High rains led to strong currents, and so all races were changed into duathlon format....

JA Race Report: "Off-Season" and Ironman Texas"
By Joe Adriaens (triadriaens.com)
Warning, this is a long report.
First off, I want to thank all my family and friends who continue to support me in this nutty sport. Without all of you, none of this is possible!
I also want to thank Team Every Man Jack and all of our sponsors (Every Man Jack, Felt Bicycles, Louis Garneau, Lululemon, Boco Gear, GU Energy Labs, Roka, Normatec Recovery, Enve Composites, Garmin, and Sockguy), Gear West Bike & Triathlon, Rich and Ambrose at NOW Bikes, Podium Sports, and Premier Sport and Spine. You all keep me rolling with the best equipment and recovery care! Thank you all so much!
"Off - Season"
The off season post Ironman Florida was short lived and lasted all of 2 weeks. After the events that transpired at Ironman Florida, I was hungry for some redemption at this distance. I won't go into details as you can scroll back and read through what happened in Florida. Needless to say, the strategy for 2018 was to train harder, get leaner, and be wiser....
Records Tumble at TriWadena...

The 3rd annual TriWADENA, aka "No Spandex Necessary Triathlon," happened last Saturday. It was highlighted by a record turnout—34 finishers, up from 29 in 2017—and course records for both genders.
Leading the way for the women was Wadena-ian, LAURA MOONEN (photo with husband Jeremy), who became a three-time winner by covering the 220yard pool swim – 12 mile – 2 mile course in 1:01:47, which lowered her 2016 CR by twenty seconds.
Third here 2017, JENNIFER PINONIEMI from nearby Menagha, claimed the silver medal this time, her 1:03:58 was 6:02 faster than her clocking last year.
Third was earned by last year's runner-up CHELSA GOLDBERG, whose bronze medal time at her hometown race was 4:02 quicker than her silver medal effort in 2017.
Perham's MICHAEL BRASEL of Perham crushed the men's race best, his 53:20 was almost four minutes better than JEREMY MOONEN's prior CR.
We suspect that JEREMY and LAURA are related.
