ED. I announced at the first triathlon I attended. It was the Firebird Lake Triathlon south of Phoenix, Arizona on June 5, 1982. The Top 3 male finishers were George Dallam, Norman (Paul) Huddle and Jimmy Riccitello, all of whom would become recognized as triathlon pioneers. The article you are about to read is about Dr. George Dallam's breakthrough research on breathing during exercise. It's interesting stuff.

Everything we know about breathing is wrong.
Next time you go for a run, pay attention to the way you breathe: Do you inhale and exhale solely through your nose? If you’re like most athletes, probably not – and that might be hindering your performance. Here’s the answer to the age-old question, “Should you breathe through your mouth or nose when running?” ...

In an earlier post we predicted that PATRICK PARISH was, by our reckoning, a slam-dunk for at least a USA Triathlon Duathlete of the Year Honorable Mention. We also claimed that BECKY YOUNGBERG had a shot at Du Master of the Year HM, but noted that because Nationals and/or Worlds were not on her schedule, the liklihood of was slim.
USAT's Duathlete of the Year list was posted a week ago, and to our chagrin, neither Parish, a multiple DOY winner, nor Youngberg, were included. (Becky, however, did collect a very well-deserved Masters Triathlete of the Year HM.
The female MOY went to Kirsten Sass, 40, of McKenzie, Tennessee, which was not a surprise. Her resume was highlighted by overall Top 5 finishes / 1st 40+ at Standard and Sprint Du Nationals.
KS is the real deal, and has been the most awarded (by USAT) female multisportswoman for the better part of the last decade.
Three of the four MOY Honorable Mentions, though, did not have resumes that, in our opinion, demanded inclusion. Becky's scorecard boasted wins at Apple and Gear West and should have been considered....

ED. Our state's fastest ironwoman (9:02!) is running in the Olympic Marathon Trials on Saturday.
By Kim Zabel (runterraloco.com)
To qualify for the marathon distance at the Olympic Trials, a female runner must finish under a time of two hours and 45 minutes in a qualifying race.
Ruth Brennan Morrey qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials at the 2019 California International Marathon with a time of 2:43.41.
That’s 1 minute and 19 seconds to spare.

USA Triathlon posted it's 2019 Triathletes of the Year yesterday. - LINK - We were please that two of the three Minnesotans we predicted would be honored, indeed were.
That said, we were somewhat dismayed by the absence of TONY SCHILLER among the male Grand Masters. We thought he would either win the GMOY, or place a close second.
The Minnesotans who were included were GABY BUNTEN in the female Open category (HM), and BECKY YOUNGBERG (listed as Becky “Youngblood”), who was named Master of the Year Honorable Mention....
A Love Letter to My Dumb Bike Trainer...

We’re snow deep in winter right now, which means one thing: lots of time on the bike trainer. Teammates and friends are posting Zwift workouts, and I recently finished a 28-day bike block (my third go-round of it), which got me thinking: what is it about the trainer – specifically my “dumb” lime green Kurt Kinetic road machine trainer – that I love so much? Let’s have a look…
We’ve been together since 2013 and have seen a lot of miles – from easy 80w recovery rides to hard 5-hour interval rides. Most of those have been happy miles, but others have been tear-filled and soul-crushing (I’m looking at you, 2017 IM Canada training). But you know what? Even the crappy ones made me appreciate what my body, legs, and mind are capable of.
I love that you’ve taught me the power of focus. There’s nothing like staring at 3sec and lap power fields on my Garmin – Girl Talk blaring in my headphones – trying to maintain and hit target watts during a mind-numbing 45-minute interval x3. Or...
