For my first blog post, I thought I’d tell you a little about me….but where to start? Here it goes. I was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, went to college here and married my husband here. We are raising our three kids here too. I work part time as a doctor of physical therapy.
Since this is mostly about my training and triathlon life I’ll give you some background on my athletic life–It’s eclectic. I competed in figure skating for a couple years. When that got too expensive, I started and later competed in dance. When that got to be too much I tried volleyball and softball for a couple years. I joined the swim team in 7th grade. I swam competitively through high school and didn’t swim again until two years ago. I also ran track in junior high. One of my biggest regrets was not running track in high school. I didn’t think I could handle both the swim team and track at the same time. I also played hockey in junior high and high school. My best friend played and wanted me to play. I could skate so why not?! I enjoyed hockey, but my heart was in swimming....

By helping us with everything from pushing watts to celebrating a birthday, food plays an important role in how we experience daily life—it even affects our mood. If you’re looking for a happier outlook, understanding the link between mood and food can help.
Mood and Food: The Relationship
1. It Improves Brain Health and Function
Certain nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, and other nutritional gems found in produce have been found to promote expression of a protein in the brain called Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF). BDNF allows your brain to form new connections and pathways. A healthy brain can make new connections easily. Eating foods rich in the above nutrients increase BDNF and you get better brain function. What you eat can literally help rewire your brain and grow new neurons.

It's safe to say that within the talented group of athletes that comprise the Headwaters Tri Club, that Neil King and Christel Kippenhan are the most decorated. Neil is a former Minnesota Grand Master of the Year, an award he is nominated for on almost an annual basis. He has also medaled at Nationals and Worlds.
Christel is a three-time Minnesota Master of the Year nominee who has just aged-up to Grand Master status, and is expected to garner future GMOY nominations. Her resume features double-digit overal women's victories.
Here's some great art and information on these two fine triathletes:

Without any triathlon race reports for this year, I thought I write about some other triathlon related stuff, sort of.
It’s Wednesday afternoon, time for my regular 3000 yds swim workout along the shoreline of Lake Movil Bay. I was on the third repetition of my 5 x 200 yd set (~ 2300 yds into my workout, and about 1/4 mile from my place) when I got a bit too close to a patch of reeds. I brushed with...
