The first part of the season is wrapped up. It started in April @ 70.3 Texas, from there we raced two more 70.3’s at St G & Des Moines along with a local duathlon then finally Heart of the Lakes Tri. The goal of this blog is to break down each section of each race of my season so far along with my thoughts behind it. The breakdown will be segmented into a few sections making it semi-readable.

The Lead Up

Going into the season I had my goals which you can read about HERE (schedule emerges pt 2) & two other things I really want to touch on are 1.) Mobility & 2.) Equipment.

For mobility, I’m doing two things – 1.) biweekly massages at Odom Health and 2.) hiring a Strength & Mobility Coach. For the massages, I really feel like this adds an edge to my program. They feel amazing and help me hit the reset button after a hard stretch of wkos....

JULY 2021 ATHLETES OF THE MONTH - July was a strange month. There were only five races and few athletes raced more than once. Because AOM considerees must have turned in at least two outstanding performances during the month in question, filling out the usual categories was impossible. So, the Committee decided to include the August 1 races--Brewhouse and Gear West Half & Olympic--on the July calendar. This solved their problem.

Here are the JULY 2021 ATHLETES OF THE MONTH:

Male Performanceof the Month - TED TREISE's win at Heart of the Lakes. His 1:29:12 was the fastest time since 2009, and his margin of victory over the deepest field of the season thus far was 2:25. (Photo L)

Female Performance of the Month - RACHEL ZILINSKAS' resounding victory at Ironman Lake Placid, where  she proved once again that she is our country's premier female amateur long distance racer. Her time of 9:52:33 was beaten by only six pros, and her margin of victory in the amateur race was a ridiculous 44:54!. ...

Passionate About Triathlon...

Sometimes we all just want to show off a little.

"At first, it kind of felt like oh I can brag about this to my friends and it ended up moving to this is a good job opportunity," said Noah Billings.

While he might not be making money just yet, Noah Billings has found something special with triathlons.

"I think my first road bike, my first time I went 20 miles an hour I was like. I got that adrenaline like I want to go faster."

He's come a long way since that first swim, ride and run....

Teetering on the Overtraining Fence...

By Jason Crisp

As a health & wellness professional, personal trainer, and endurance sports coach i feel I must share my recent struggles.

As many of you know I’m training for Ironman Lake Placid on July 25 with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the world championships in Hawaii. This takes extreme amount of commitment and energy. However ones energy is limited. We need it for all areas of our life from family obligations, work, social, etc plus to handle other daily stressors.

The last few weeks I’ve had my blinders on and have been putting in some serious hard training. Nothing different from the past however I’m busier than the past so safe to say this past weekend put me over the edge of that energy balance. Original symptoms were edginess, lack of focus with daily things, slight performance decline, plus Sunday I verbally just said I can’t take any more. With that all said I should’ve backed off this week but continued to train hard mon-Wednesday all the while I started having anxiety/panic attacks in the middle of the night that didn’t allow for much sleep. These increased to happening during the day doing simple tasks. Fortunately yesterday I went and saw a great doctor (former endurance athlete who himself has experienced overtraining syndrome). He talked about the physiological reason things are happening to me. Basically with the mix of work, home life, constant stimulation from screens, and hard training my adrenal gland/hormones are out of wack causing sudden surges of cortisol & adrenaline hence the middle of the night anxiety attacks. Trust me it’s not a fun thing....
