Liberty is Back!

The Minnesota tri scene has lost some major races lately, some permanently, some hoping to return. Prominent among the losses are four-time Race of the Year SUPERIOR MAN and our state's grandest swim-bike-run, MINNEAPOLIS TRIATHLON.
Perhaps saddest news of all: We just learned that the YWCA WOMEN'S TRI will not happen this year.
It's encouraging to know that while some iconic races leave the calendar, there are a few new races that may fill some of the holes (more on these proposed events later). Perhaps the best news in this regard is the return of the LIBERTY TRIATHLON, a race that enjoyed fifteen great seasons and boasted one of the best venues in the upper Midwest....
Liberty, the centerpiece of the many great multisport events produced by Final Stretch, had consisted of a half Ironman and an Olympic-distance event. The resurrected race, slated for August 1 and produced by Gear West Bike and Triathlon and a group of enthusiastic local athletes, will be staged at picturesque Lake Rebecca Park Reserve and will utilize most of the original courses. Due to construction projects and permitting issues, Liberty's longer race will feature a 42 mile bike course instead of a 56-miler.
Race information and registration will be available on Gearwest.com. MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
