BreakAway Kids Tri is Good Medicine

By Tony Schiller, 7-time world champion triathlete and co-founder of CycleHealth, a Minnesota non-profit dedicated to creating a new cycle of health, starting with kids.

The people at the starting line of any triathlon are not a representative sample of the population. As triathletes committed to our fitness, we’re likely to avoid many of the...

chronic health problems caused by inactivity. Not so for the majority of the population, where the health statistics are horrific. Half of Americans have at least one chronic disease, and only 20% get the minimum recommended amount of physical activity.

The stats are even worse for kids, but here's all you need to know: For the first time in American history, this generation of kids has a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

Read that again… kids today are expected to live shorter lives than their parents. That’s unacceptable.

Pediatricians see the health crisis everyday as they treat kids for conditions that are highly preventable with an active lifestyle. Until now, they haven’t had a proactive tool to inspire kids and families to change their wellness habits. Pediatricians are now mobilizing to reverse the trends. That’s why they’ve joined us in pioneering the nation’s first Sweat Rx, a prescription for sweat.

As triathletes, you’ll be glad to know that pediatricians in more than 50 Twin Cities clinics are prescribing our BreakAway Kids Tri to kids. They are making the lifelong sports of swimming, biking, running and triathlon into ‘just what the doctor ordered’ for good health.

Now in our third year, we are getting ready for the biggest BreakAway Kids Tri yet, on Sat. Aug. 20 at Lake Elmo Park Reserve, near Woodbury.

Two ways to join us, and be part of a wellness movement that is inspiring kids and families, and pediatricians too:

  1. REGISTER YOUR KIDS TO RACE. (Click HERE) The BreakAway Kids Tri has two course options: Super Sprint - 100 yard swim, 3 mile bike, half mile run, obstacles; Mega Challenge - 200 yard swim, 6 mile bike, 1 mile run, obstacles. ALL kids (ages 7-17) can finish this race!

  2. VOLUNTEER. (Click HERE) A world class kids’ race requires 100+ caring volunteers, both on the course and under the pavilion. Several shift options to choose.
