King Boreas Winter Triathlon Preview - Minnesota’s first winter triathlon is also the USAT Winter Tri National Championship, which we think is very cool. We hope you do too....
We also hope that enough folks participate—there are almost 100 current registrants!—in this run-fat bike-Nordic ski event at Lake Phalen in St. Paul that it stimulates the emergence of future winter multisport events in Minnesota. (It would be great to see 3-5 such events on the 2017 calendar!)
Lots of highly accomplished summer triathletes have already signed up for this January 31 race and we’re anxious to see how well they do when skiing is added to the format.
Who’s gonna be there, you ask?
- Cindi Bannink, 38, Madison, WI – Wisconsin’s winningest female triathlete for the last decade. Cindi was a USAT AOY HM in 2010 (she placed 2nd at Nationals that year!) and former US Tri Coach of the Year.
- Sean Cooley, 30, St. Paul (via Grand Forks, ND) – Our pick to win next Sunday. As a five-time winner of the North Dakota Iceman, Sean is the most accomplished winter triathlete in the field.
- Anne Grabowski, 48, Minneapolis – Winner of two summer sprint tris in 2015 and runnerup in her AG at Chicago Sprint Worlds, Anne has emerged over the last three seasons as one of Minnesota’s premier master multisporters.
- Lauren Garriques, 15, Lake Forest, IL – An elite HS runner, Lauren is an up-and-coming draft-legal tri star.
- Lindsey Marshall, 26, St. Paul – Great creds in both tri and Nordic skiing have us thinking that she’ll podium next weekend.
- Christina Roberts, 29, St. Louis Park – Ranked 2nd on Team Minnesota and winner of the Most Improved award last year, we definitely predict a podium finish for her at Lake Phalen. In fact, she's our pick to win!
- Christina Ross, 36, Chaska – Dr. Ross has solid multisport credentials, though she races infrequently. A star mountain biker, we think she’ll post the fastest women’s bike spit next weekend.
- Sheri Schrock, 61, Cohasset – Runner-up for Minnesota Grand Master of the Year award last season, we would be surprised if she wasn’t the fastest 50+ women next Sunday. (Helen Gunther, 58, will give her a great race.)
