11th Annual GREEN LAKE TRIATHLON - This terrific event is starting its second decade. We'd love to see record numbers on hand to be a part of the celebration....
Unfortunately, Nationals and the several other in-state races this weekend have leeched bodies from this event.
Green Lake would benefit from a big enrollment bump this week and we certainly hope that happens. This race has everything. A great venue, abundant amenities and a wonderful small-town vibe. If you're not heading for Milwaukee, Big Lake, Nevis or Red Wing this weekend, please join us in Spicer on Sunday, okay?
While the GL races, Olympic-ish and Sprint, may be slightly smaller this year, the competition should be as strong as ever. Last year's sprint winner, Casey Miller, is enrolled in the longer event this year, and he's our pick to win the men's race. If he does, he'll become the event's first participant to win at both distances here. Also, a win would be his fourth of the 2014 season. (He's already in the Most Improved discussion.)
Super-Master Heidi Keller-Miler is threatening to race in Spicer on Sunday. If she does, we believe that she'll not only win, but lower the women's long course record, Veronica Bond's 2:00:49 set last year. If HKM does this, she will emerge one of the Master of the Year frontrunners. It's an award she's won three times (2012, 2011, 2006) already.
If Heidi is not on the starting line, our pick to win is Jen Neuman, whose career scorecard is currently highlighted by five victories.
We believe that the 1-2 finish in the Sprint race on Sunday will mimick what happened at Brewhouse Sprint last Saturday, with Mike "Tambourine Head" Ward (photo) coming out on Top and current Minnesota Rookie of the Year frontrunner Nicholas Nygaard taking second.
As for a prediction on the women's Sprint race, we believe that she has yet to register.
