Which is the BIGGER triathlon event in 2012: Kona or Olympics?
By Darin Wieneke
The triathlon headlines in early 2012 have featured lots of exciting news about both the 2012 Olympics and Ironman World Championships (Kona). Examples include Olympic favorite Alistair Brownlee suffering an Achilles tear, Lance Armstrong's plan to qualify for Kona and Chrissie Wellington
The longer you think about this question, however, the tougher the question becomes. The Olympics have been regarded as the world's foremost sports competition for centuries. Accordingly, an Olympic medal is treasured in every sport. This competition only comes around every 4 years so the window of opportunity to win is extremely narrow. Chris McCormack chose not to defend his Kona title for a last shot at the Olympics and Andy Potts had the Olympic rings tattooed on his arm for a reason. ITU draft-legal races have become even more competitive and popular in recent years. The speed displayed by the likes of Alistair Brownlee, Emma Moffatt and Javier Gomez is extremely impressive. The world will be watching London this summer. With the increasing popularity of triathlon across the world, there should be great coverage of the triathlon events.
