COSTLY BOO-BOO - North Mankato's Todd Landgraff had a breakout season in 2010, and was enjoying even greater break-out-iness in 2011. He came into Saturday's Young Life Olympic with two wins and two 2nds on his '11 resume. According to a guy we talked to after the race, Todd probably should have won the race. He didn't because he and a few others missed a buoy on the swim leg and was later Deeked.

Nobody misses buoys on purpose. Just ask Thad. That's something that you simply can't get away with.

Well, it does appear that Todd would have won the men's race, had the mishap not occurred. His pre-Deek time was 1:58:37. Sean Cooley's official winning time was 2:07:48. It is unlikely, according to the guy we spoke to, that Todd's boo-boo cut 9:11 off the time he would have recorded had he swam (swum?) the entire route....

IMPRINTING - Christina Roberts (photo above L) has done some of her best racing at Young Life Olympic. Her first career win was posted there in 2009. In 2010, as well as last Sunday, she placed 2nd. Robert's 2nd career win was turned in last June at Liberty Olympic.

Tara Makinen has also done some of her best racing at this Detroit Lakes event. On Sunday she won the Young Life Sprint for the 3rd consecutive year. And in 2008, she finished 2nd. FYI, Tara hate's it when her name is pronounced "Irishly." Makinen is Finish. It doesn't sound like "McKinnon." More correctly, it should be pronounced "Mack-In-Nen." YL - RESULTS

BEST ANTHEM - Race personnel fumbled in vain with their respective iPods attempting to disgorge either Alicia Keyes or the Michigan State University Marching Band's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner prior to the start of Sunday's Lake Marion Triathlon. A call went out asking for volunteers to lead the participants and spectators in the pre-race anthem.

Totally lovely ladies, Leslie and Kim, came forward. Gosh, they were good. Most of the assembled throng joined in.

MTN applauds Leslie and Kim, believing wholeheartedly that they were responsible for the best audience participation version of the National Anthem ever performed at a Minnesota multisport event.

As for best solo version of the anthem at one of our state's tri/dus, that award has gotta go to Amanda Schutz, wife of Trinona and Life Time-Minneapolis director, Dave Schutz, who sang at both of her husband's races. She was amazing!

THEY COULD BE TWINS - Do you know Chuck and Phil Smith, the guys in charge of the Lake Marion Triathlon? It's really hard to tell them apart. Heck, they look so much alike
