TRI Clear Lake Coverage - Despite the cancelled swim, Minnesota triathetes did what they always do at this early-season northern Iowa multi, and we're pleased to say that most of our prerace prognostications were correct.
Let's look at the Intermediate distance (2 mile run - 25 mile bike - 10K run) competition first.
We predicted that Minneapolis pro TED TREISE would end Iowa pro TYSON WEILAND's winning streak, and he did so rather handily, thanks to his five minute pullaway on the bike. That margin endured, giving Ted a 1:39:47 to Tyson's runnerup 1:44:45.
Taking third was first amateur NATHAN KIM, who was nominated for three MMHs last year, including Triathlete of the Year. Rounding out the Top 5 were former, albeit briefly, Minnesotan STUART GILDEA and Minneapolis' PETER WIKMAN.
Winning the men's 19 & Under title was Rochester's NOAH BILLINGS (photo), a two-time Minnesota Junior of the Year. Coon Rapids' DAVID CARNEY, who was coming off a successful 2024 tri season, cracked the...
overall Top 10 and won his 50-54M division by almost eleven mintutes. CHUCK HENGEL, a Grand Master of the Year nominee in 2024 won the men's 60-64 category.
Leading the way for Minnesota women was Deephaven's decorated ELENA JASPER, who placed 4th behind a trio of talented Wisconsinites, starting with pro OLIVIA DIETZEL, and followed by 2024 Olympic Nationals runnerup RACHEL WERKING, then SARAH SPOONER, who popped a 9:44 at Ironman Texas last month.
Good Thunder's TERRI PRANGE won the women's 65-69 division.
Fewer Minnesotans participated in the Sprint du (1 mile - 12.4 miles - 5K run) this year, but two of them--17-year old CORBIN DEICHMAN and 20-year-old SEAN PICKLE--took 2nd and 4th overall respectively. Corbin was named Minnesota's Junior of the Year in 2024, and Sean is a three-time nominee for that honor.
Minnesota women took two of the Top 3 overall places in the women's Sprint race. Earning 2nd was JILL ELLENBECKER, 53, of Minneapolis. Third was taken by ASHLEIGH WHITTON, 45, of Eden Prairie. The women's race was won for the second straight year by South Dakota teen AUTUMN GILHOOLY. RESULTS
