Apple Tri Race Report - Sartell's Apple Triathlon kicked off my 2025 season and my new chapter as a triathlete dad. I utilized the race to work on process goals and hitting certain marks throughout the race. I had two goals for myself. First, validate my bike improvements that I’ve seen in training. Secondly, run the 5k under 18 minutes which would be a personal best in a tri.

This was by far the coldest triathlon of my 50+ finishes. After a comfortable pool swim, we entered the outdoor transition at 40 degrees. My plan was to dry off on the run to T1 with a towel and then ride with sleeves, gloves, and shoe covers...

On the 20-mile bike ride I surprisingly warmed up after about 5 miles when I dried off a bit. My legs felt solid and I was hitting my power target but the speed was unbelievably slow due to the cold weather. I was frustrated with the slow speed on the day and decided I would take it out on the run. I eased off the power for the last couple minutes of the ride and welcomed the cold temps for the run. I set out on a mission to make a statement with my run split. I felt fast and fresh so I let my legs roll ahead of my planned pace. I managed to split a 5:36 mile and scorched a 17:36 which is faster than I've run any open 5k. Dad strength might be a real thing!

I left this race feeling more confident than ever in my abilities. Next up is the Buffalo Olympic distance. I’ve raced it twice with poor results in both attempts. Once was my 21st birthday where a user error left me with a jammed bike chain on the side of the road. My second attempt was a dead last finish in the Men’s elite wave.

I have plenty to prove and I’m gunning for the top step this time around.
