YOUNGLIFE SPRINT COVERAGE - Favorites prevailed at the 17th edition of this annual sprint classic this moorning. Husband and wife team BRANDEN SCHEEL and ALEXA STALLWORTH racked up impressive wins, Branden outsplitting the men's field in both the bike and run, Stallworth leading from the get-go with a fast swim. ...
Scheel won this race in 2018 in what we believe to be a course best 56:54. Today he bettered that time by four seconds. His closest rival was Fargo's meteoric ANDREW MANNING, who has a win and two seconds in Minnesota triathlons this season.
Elite masters DAVID LEWIS, last year's Young Life Olympic winner, and MARIO MINELLI grabbed the 3rd and fourth places.
Stallworth's win entailed that she outrace the woman who is one of South Dakota's fastest rising tri stars, HANNAH CARLSON of Aberdeen, home of former national class tri / du legend KIM FORDHAM LEIN, who we still miss terribly even though she's been in multisport retirement for the last decade-and-a-half.
We digress.
As for Carlson, we have been following her career since her big win at the Ouland Challenge in 2017. Her victory at Dakotaman last year was equally impressive.
Two-time YL Sprint winner SIMONE LUNDQUIST, 17, rounded out the women's Top 3 and won the junior division by more than five minutes. Simone was a Minnesota Junior of the Year nominee in 2019.
Weather was accommodating for the 165 athletes who finished this race.
