TRI-U-MAH on the Minneapolis campus of The U is our state's best-attended indoor triathlon. A ninety-minute workout consisting of 30 minutes of pool swimming, 30 minutes of stationary bike riding and 30 minutes of treadmill running.
The final enrollment list had approximately 200 names, with 160 athletes participating and finishing on race day, February 11....
We were unsurprised to learn that 2017 Junior of the Year nominee, GARRETT WELSCH, covered more distance than any of his male counterparts, 18.25 miles to be exact. A highlight of his 2017 outdoor season was his junior CR at the Life Time Minneapolis Triathlon. Very impressive.
From Stillwater, Garrett attends UMD, where he is in an exciting science and math program called "Double Eagle." Welsch is a tall, hoodie-wearing fan of "Game of Thrones" and Weird Al's musical parodies. Fine young man.
Claiming the rest of the men's podium were NICK HANNULA (17.86 miles), a dapper gentleman who looks a little bit like Leonardo Di Caprio, and successful outdoor tri veteran JIM GUENTER, who was also 3rd here in 2017. This time around, Jim covered 17.71 miles. Last year his total was 17.16.
The women's race was won by verteran distance runner PAIGE SCHULZ, whose impressive 16.97 is one of the best women's performances in the 14-year history at Tri-U-Mah. She covered more than a mile more than last year's women's champ.
Also throwing down a distance (16:07) that would have won the 2017 event was decorated outdoor tri / du-athlete TRACIE KENT. Tying for 3rd was TARA LNDAHL and a woman with the omnipresent smile: JEN NEUMAN. They each covered 15.16 miles.
