16th NORTH MANKATO DUATHLON - Dave "Hercules" Lyon, who's wife Veronica is a HOOT!, and Kristin Gustafson, who won Superior Man last year and has a great tan, led the way for their respective genders in breezy, steamy North Mankato yesterday morning. Lyon prevailed despite suffering from what he called a "groing thing." Herc also won here in 2013.
Todd Landgraff, who won this race in 2011 and 2009 and missed all of last season in order to change poopy diapers, placed 2nd, 41 ticks after Lyon. 2013 women's champ Jenna Rinehart, who is a pro mountain biker, finished 18 seconds after Gustafson. Thirdsies went to Mike Cahill and Veronica Bond.
The event, which was totally good, drew approximately 200 race day entrants. Perennial division...
champion here, Denny Ellingson sang the National Anthem really good and, as always, Mike Borneke and Carol Marston, both finalists in the 2013 Pillsburg Smile-Off, hung out together. RESULTS
10th AVERAGE JO TRIATHLON - Baxter's Casey Miller collected his third career win yesterday morning in Perham. The 2013 Rookie of the Year nominee was 2nd here last year. Casey's margin of victory over runner-up Brendon Scheel, 18, of Fargo, ND was 2:01. Former Detroit Lakes resident, now of Anchorage, Alaska, Nick Bakker, pronounced "Bah-Ker," rounded out the men's Top 3.
Geneva, Illinois' Cheryl Rosentreter successfully defended her 2013 title. Cheryl is 53-years-old, and according to her Facebook page, loves the Chicago Blackhawks, Pug Dogs and Subway sandwiches. On Saturday she bettered Taryn Brennan's 2nd place time by 5:30. Brennan is from Fort Collins, Colorado. She's a dietetic intern and loves food and the Kings of Leon.
This year's event boasted 133 finishers. RESULTS
25th LAKE WACONIA TRIATHLON - With his victory this morning, Matt Payne remained undefeated for the season: Six starts, six wins. The women's race was won by 2013 runner-up Nicole Heininger. More words and some pics on Tuesday. RESULTS
CHICAGO WORLD TRIATHLON - Wausau, Wisconsin's Dani Fischer won the women's Elite Amateur race in dominating fashion. We mention this because she plans to race one or two more times on Minnesota soil this season, which will make her eliigible for MMA consideration. Already she has won the amateur crown at Apple, and the women's title at Best of the US at Lake Phalen.
As soon as we learn more about how Minnesota athletes fared at Chicago, we will update this post.
UPDATE: The fastest Minnesota amateur woman was Duluth's Jessica Rossing, who placed 13th overall in 2:13:58.
