Fall Classic Duathlon - Minnesota's 2nd duathlon season--there's a spring calendar and one in the fall--is underway, the most recent contest being the 6th annual Fall Classic at Lake Elmo Park Reserve last Saturday. Many of our state's "usual suspect" duathletes -- Derick Podratz, Jennifer Scudiero, Nolan Barrios, Rick Wegener, Jen Strange--did their typically impressive run-bike-run thangs, but there was a new name that lanced the event's predictability as if it were a big, livid, festering boil.
Okay, that was an excessive, and totally unappetizing, simile. Sorry....
The new name belongs to Illinois transplant Angela Kidd, and she was the women's champ on Saturday. We were aware of, and impressed by, some of her prior tri results, especially at the half IM distance. She lives in Chanhassen now and is a friend of 2010 Master of the Year nominee Julia Weisbecker, who had these glowing, and unedited, emailed words about her:
Hi MTN Guys,
......if you want the skinny on Angela Kidd I have it.
She is a fbulous athlete and not surprised she kicked ass in Lake elmo, small field but still. She is from IL, moved up here last fall and proceeded to pop out LAndon here lovely daughter, she has Zach who is 3 or 4 too. David her husband owns midwest brewing and supply on Lyndale and is an avid college football fan and thinks running a 5k is as far as he could imagine. Angela did Kona in....2010? She was and will again be coached by our favorite JHC, Jen Harrison. (ED. Jen is a HOOT!)
IF angela can stay uninjured keep an eye our for her other than the fact that she is threatening to get a OQtime on the marathon, which she is capable of if her body allows.
She also loves cream cheese frosting and is addicted to mocha's from caribou.
Julia
PS and a great friend, she brought me two big bags of stuff in madison from the farmers market bc she knew i was staying in with rich. She is a lovely lovely person.
She does sound nice, doesn't she? And it sounds like Landon had a smooth birth, but did she really pop her out? And if so, did it make a popping sound, maybe like a champagne cork? That would be cool.
We digress.
A 4:46 70.3er (Eagleman 2009, which was where we saw her race in person), Ang threw down a 1:16 at Lake Elmo, placing her 13th overall and 1:11 ahead of runner-up Jennifer Scudiero. For Jen, it was her 6th du podium in her last two seasons of racing. Jenny Thacker took the final podium spot for the girls. In other dus this season, Thacker took 6th at Falls and 15th at Apple.
For the guys, Brandon Ordway (photo L) collected his 2nd multisport win of the season. Vastly improved in 2012, Brandon kicked off this season with a win at the new Blaine Triathlon. Finishing 2nd was 2010 FCD champ Derick Podratz. David Phillips, who impressed us with a runner-up effort at Maple Grove Sprint a few weeks back, rounded out the dude's Top 3.
If you were in alive and conscious in Minnesota on Saturday, you know that the weather was awesome. Awesome weather makes races better. Ergo, the 6th edition of the FCD was good.
