Race Coverage- Ann Clowser raced in last Saturday's buccaneer-themed Croixathlon looking all piratey in her an eye patch and Captain Hook hook hand, begging the question as to which of these disfigurements she endured first. Our guess is that she lost her hand first and then later absently tried to remove a contact lens with her new hook.
Just a theory.
Ann was a divisional winner last Saturday, as was her husband, whose empty right eye socket was concealed beneath a handsome patch. Kirk claims to be 55, but could pass for 35. It's disgusting.
Nobody gives pre-race meeting like Amy and Gretchen. They're respective monologues were laced with skallywaggy jargon and hyperbolic messages, like "any spectators who are in the transition area during the race will be stabbed." Gretchen was wielding a totally cool, albeit non-lethal, sword when she delivered this message in her signature deadpan. Like Amy, Gretch is a HOOT!....
This year's event, the 7th edition, featured new courses that were architected by the Wild River Tri Club's Jim Felling, a totally cool guy. In keeping with the day's mock-diabolical vibe, Jim's courses were totally harder than any of the routes previously utilized here. The distances that Jim laid out were published as 600 yards, 15 miles and 3 miles. He got close. Our best guess, based on splits, suggest that the swim was more like 800 meters; the bike at least 15.5 and the run in the 3.2ish range. Close enough. By the way, Jim rocked, placing 3rd overall.
Winning the men's race for the seconds straight year was David Holden. Twas a landmark win for the North Hudson-based swashbuckler. According to our records, it was career win #10 for Holden and his 2nd W in three starts this season. As in 2011, David should garner a Master of the Year nomination when the dust settles at the end of this fast-moving season.
Restauranteur extraordinaire Cheryl Barker was 4th here in 2011. She won convincingly on Saturday. The next time you're in her restaurant, which is appropriately named "Barkers" and is located on the main drag in Hudson, we recommend the cod sandwich. Yummilicious.
Do you know Wally Milbrath (photo R)? Those who do, love him to pieces. He's a great guy and he even provided two of the photos used in this post. (He did not know that we planned to mention him in the story.) He's in a battle for his life right now and we think he's gonna beat this thing he has. He's certainly in our thoughts on a daily basis.
Well, Wally did the race on Saturday. Gosh, it was great to see him cross the finish line and to witness the loving shouts and applause he received.
