Whey and casein used to monopolize the protein department when it came to sports products like protein powder and bars. Now there are a whole slew of plant-based protein sources included in our sport foods! I often get the question — which one is really best? Most easily absorbed? Healthiest? Like so many areas of nutrition, the answer is highly individual.
For athletes who process dairy products well, whey and casein are good options. Plant-based proteins do not contain milk and pave the way for easier digestion for those who don’t process dairy efficiently. Many of the vegetarian proteins are also gluten free and soy free. Minnesota Multisport Awards - 2015 was the "Year of the Woman" in Minnesota, thus selecting four PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR nominees was much tougher than usual. Narrowing the list to four was tough, but here are the official nominees:
MICHELLE ANDRES, 38, East Gull Lake (photo bottom L) - Victory at Ironman Wisconsin - Gender leading bike (5:24:55) and run (3:23:06) splits led to a 10:08:05 finish time, which was 13:52 faster than the 2nd place woman, Kelley O'Mara of California. Andres also won IMOO in 2012.
SUZIE FOX, 31, Chaska (photo below L) - Victory at Lake Waconia. Suzie's time was 1:33:05, which lowered Cathy Yndestad's 2007 course record by 54 seconds, and bettered her own PR by 1:18....

Eight thousand to 10,000 calories. For an elite triathlete finishing an Ironman in the eight-to-nine-hour range, that’s how many calories will be burned while swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and running a marathon. If you could stomach it, you could replace those calories after the race by eating 15 Whoppers, 18 Big Macs or—if you wanted a healthier option—35 Carl’s Jr. Grilled Chicken Salads. But recovering properly after exercise isn’t simply about replacing lost calories. It’s about what you consume and when.
During the early days of Ironman, the pioneers of triathlon fueled themselves on the windy and hot Kona, Hawaii, course with Gatorade, water, bananas, figs and boiled potatoes with salt wrapped in foil. When the race was over, the menu of choice was burgers and fries—washed down, of course, with lots of beer....
