SQUAMISH, British Columbia — The race was tough and the conditions dreadful — 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of cycling and 26.2 miles of running, mostly in freezing rain — but Susanne Davis crossed the Ironman Canada finish line last July certain that she had won her category, women aged 40-44.
Davis, who comes from Carlsbad, Calif., and is one of the top triathletes in her age group in the world, had been first out of the water and first off her bike — she was sure of it....

The trend reflects the changing role of age-groupers in triathlon.

In recent years, prize purses for professional triathletes have been significantly reduced—the HyVee triathlon, once a 1.1 million dollar event, is no more; the Life Time Tri series cut the majority of its professional prize purse; Ironman has redistributed its prize money and eliminated pro races at several events.

When the MTN Guys think about the the St. Cloud area's multisport scene, four things come immediately to mind: Pammy Stevens, teenage girls, the Apple Duathlon and "Minnesota Nice." Working from latter to former, let's break this down:
"Minnesota Nice" - There is a sense of community in St. Cloud's multi world that is, in our opinion, unrivaled in our state. The friendships are deep and abiding and the vibe is supremely welcoming. Hang out with Pam and Daryl (photo L), Nikki, Cindy, Judy and Mike, Adam and Raechel, Cheri, Kathy, Andy Z et al for five minutes and you'll know what we're talking about. They are truly lovely folks.
"Apple Duathlon" - Started during Woodrow Wilson's second term, The Apple, which is produced and executed by many of the people mentioned above, is simply, in our humble opinion, the best duathlon in America....

Over the last week or so, a whole bunch of our appliances have shown signs of age.
First, the handle on our microwave ripped off. Sheared the screws that held the handle in place right in half. We did a little investigative work and discovered the microwave was built (and installed above the stove) in 1997. More investigation revealed that they no longer make the model OR the replacement handle. Until we have the time to go shopping for a new one, we are left with plying open the door with a screwdriver in order to nuke our food....
