MTN Guys - I wrote the below comeback story for a hip replacement forum (hip runner) recently. The forum is for active people considering hip replacement or coming back from it to share information and experiences. I modified it for the local MN tri community and thought it might be useful to anyone in our local community thinking about a hip replacement or coming back from a major injury.
Sitting in a dark room recovering from ... right eye cataract (a 20 year old engine in a 65 year old body…stuff just wears out), I wanted to provide a summary of my experience coming back to racing after a total hip replacement for anyone considering or coming back from a major surgery or recent major injury.
Background: I twist broke my leg while cross country skiing in 2011. It was during a winter training season as I was building fitness to try and qualify for the 2011 Ironman Championships in Kona. Nine years later after multiple PT sessions, doctor visits and painful runs off the bike….it was finally diagnosed that my twist break most likely resulted in a labrum tear and I now needed a New hip. So in June 2020 with all the races cancelled and no ability to run any longer, I had a right posterior total hip replacement that included a titanium post in my femur, ceramic head and a titanium socket with synthetic lining....

2021 MINNESOTA MULTISPORT HONORS - There has never been a better year for our state's female Grand Masters. More over age-55 women rocked the local, regional and national scenes than ever before. PAM STEVENS, 68, CHRISTEL KIPPENHAN, 56, AMY WOOLSEY, 55, TRACY SERREYN, 57, turned in stellar performances, as did MARY DEEG, 59, LISA HINES, 58, RHIANNON O'CONNOR, 65, and others.
Those athletes performed at a very high level, but three Grand Masters raced at an even higher level. Every effort turned in by these women was national, if not world, level. Those three extraordinary athletes are our nominees for 2021 FEMALE GRAND MASTER OF THE YEAR.
In alpha order, they are JAN GUENTHER, JULIA WEISBECKER and CHERYL ZITUR. Check out their hightlights: ...

2021 MINNESOTA MULTISPORT HONORS - 2021 was a great year for Rookies, and juniors, too. We managed to narrow the teen field to five, which means that several talented athletes, e.g. CARSON DEICHMAN, 18, Mankato (1st overall at Bluff Creek , 2nd / Junior course record at Buzz Ryan), ARIANNA WERTS, 19, Rochester (AG Record @ Buffalo Olympic), NATASHA SORTLAND, 16, Mazeppa (6th - 1st Junior @ Heart Of the Lakes), CAROLINE PETERSON, 19, Northfield (2nd overall woman @ Heart of the Lakes Sprint), and especially MORGAN BELL, 18, Osseo (Top 10s / AG wins at Timberman Sprint, Chisago Sprint and Green Lake Sprint)--didn't quite make the cut. In their defense, most either didn't meet the three-race volume minimum, or their resumes included regional and National Draft Legal results that, in most cases, don't apply in MMH deliberations....

MINNESOTA MULTISPORT HONORS - The rescheduling of Kona has made it possible for the Minnesota Multisport Honors (MMH) Committee to announce it's 2021 MMH nominees weeks earlier than usual. Today we kick off that process by revealing the nominees for ROOKIE OF THE YEAR. We're happy to report that 2021 has been a great year for competitive newbies.
To be eligible for ROT consideration, athletes must have turned in at least three truly noteworthy performances, ones that demonstrate that they are, or are becoming, competitive with the established elite amateurathletes in our state.

Heart of the Lakes Triathlon
This was an absolute blast of an event. My mom’s side of the family’s cabin is in Annandale and coincidently the weekend of HOLT was the same weekend as our family reunion at said cabin. On race morning, team Treise had a crew! Going into the race my mentality was, I just wanted to suit up and race, that’s it – whatever that meant for performance-wise was secondary after coming off a midseason break.
S: Josh Mork, AKA Mr. Wildcard, put in a huge effort with the goal of gapping the field. The young gun, Kyle Swenson, was able to hang on with Kevin O’Connor and myself sharing his draft. Once Kevin pulled off, the three of us swam back into shore.
B/R: On the bike it wouldn’t surprise me if Josh pushed 27-28mph or whatever to stay up front. IMO he races best on the front of the race & once he’s there, Josh is not going anywhere. However this wasn’t his day. I took the lead leaving transition then hung out there until the finish. I felt decent on bike, but am most excited to come away with a good run. My runs this year have been labored and I’m finally feeling the flow out there. In all, a great day on the course and you cannot beat racing local....
