Going Off Course - As a child, Nevis triathlete David Lewis was a gifted nose picker. While most kids relied on the index fingers of their dominant hands to do their nasal mining, David was adroitly excavating his nostrils with all ten digits. In the vintage photo here, the right-handed youngster, age 3, is expertly utilizing the ring finger of his left hand. Impressive, indeed.
David claims that his ten-finger nose-picking dexterity has contributed to the heightened development of other phalangeal skills, like playing concert piano and typing 200 words a minute. David admits that he doesn't actually play the piano or type really fast, but believes that had he been interested in those things, he would have become proficient in record time....
As a horn-dog teenager his digital dexterity often got him into trouble. In his high school yearbook he was voted "Most Likely to Get Slapped."
The girl who slapped him more often than anyone else was named Nancy (photo R - David & Nancy being adolescents). After a decade of his grabbing and her slapping, David and Nance got married. Not long thereafter they off-sprung two handsome little nose miners (photo below).
The Lewis family lives happily in bucolic Nevis. They dine regularly at Subway, watch both the 5 PM and 5:30 PM episodes of the Simpsons on Fox and dream of vacationing in Australia.
David used to have hair and sometimes wishes he still did. With or without filamentous biomaterial, though, David is a handsome and muscular and totally cool guy with straight white teeth.
And a really, really good sport.
Here's some more stuff about David Lewis, who is currently injured and hopes to be healthy enough to race in July. We hope to see you then, Dave.
Name: David Lewis
Age: 37
Home: Nevis
Born: Hammond, In
Moved to Nevis, Minnesota in the 3rd grade, and was told by my father that we were to live in a log cabin with a dirt floor. Needless to say the old man was just messin with the city kid. So went from urban life of hanging around street corners and playing on railroad tracks, to living in the middle of the woods at a dead-end dirt road. But after a few years of mild adjustment, grew to love what they call "Gods Country" which it truly is. Went to high school in Nevis, where I played football, which was a 9-man powerhouse in the early 90's which anyone that played ball at VERNDALE, MN will tell you. But slightly more important I met my future wife Nancy, and after about ten or so years of dating. We where married and later had to boys Ethan 7 and Eli 5. My dad and I own and operate a construction business, so life for me is just as any other triathlete. Work, family, train and finding the right balance.
