MINNESOTA MULTISPORT HONORS - Today we reveal the male and female MASTER OF THE YEAR and the GRAND MASTER OF THE YEAR:
Female MOY Nominees: KORTNEY HAAG, DIANE HANKEE, CATHY YNDESTAD, BECKY YOUNGBERG
WINNER: BECKY YOUNGBERG
Without question, 2019 produced the most talented assemblage of female MOY nominees ever. Hankee won four races and claimed three other regional podiums. Haag won two of the four races she entered and placed 2nd in the other two. Yndestad set three course records and one of her efforts is a POY finalist.
Youngberg, however, had nine outstanding triathlon performances in 2019, including three outright victories, two course records and two national titles. All five Selectors favored Youngberg as MOY.
Like CY, Becky is a TOY finalist...
Male MOY Nominees: DAN ARLANDSON, MIKE BUENTING, BROOKS GROSSINGER, ANDY WIBERG
WINNER: BROOKS GROSSINGER
This was a two-man race between Brooks and Arlandson, one that required a tie-breaker to determine. Arlandson fans are quick to point out, without opposition, that Dan's 3rd place overall amateur finish in 9:20:31 was the Performance of the Year by a Minnesota Master. Those favoring Brooks' weighed his entire tri resume, featuring two wins, one course record, and two 2nds.
The question became, which of these athletes would rank higher on Team Minnesota. There is where Brooks edged Dan by one spot.
GMOY Nominees: LUKE HARNED, THOMAS ROHMAN, TONY SCHILLER, PAM STEVENS
WINNER: TONY SCHILLER
An easy choice. While the other nominees were strutting their national class stuff, Tony raced at a world class level in each of his four starts. The 61-year-old beat all of the age-50-and-above athletes at Lake Minnetonka and Heart of the Lakes, finishing a rather outrageous 8th overall both times. After that he claimed two national titles, both by convincing margins.
A slam-dunk selection.
