January 2016 Interview - Professional Triathlete, Ruth Brennan Morrey
RBM is a 70.3 Ironman Champion with multiple 70.3 podium performances and is coming off her first professional performance at Ironman World Championships. Her previous sport background was as a Division I soccer player and Olympic Trials marathoner.

Top triathletes seem to have the ability to hurt more and for longer periods of time. Do you think this is true? Is it more refined mental training or simply a higher physical level? ....
The key term here is “seem”. Many people think that professional triathletes are just able to suffer more and therefore race faster. Not really true. Of course, the mental game is a huge element of high performance, however, a professional triathlete’s body has the same tolerances and physiological limitations as an age groupers body.
In long course racing, learning what that fine line is between racing at your physiological limits vs racing too hard or too easy is a skill that takes a lot of body awareness and experience. Genetics, consistency, and smart disciplined training & recovery are typically the major factors that result in fast times.
In terms of mental training, there are developed skills and a learning curve for managing discomfort. ‘Allowing’ oneself to push the limits has much to do with experience, raw desire, and goals/objectives of training and racing.
