I had a plan. Then some tweaking took place. Some flip-flopping. A surprise race announcement. It isn’t exactly what I was planning two months ago, but the 2014 schedule is set.
A brief overview -
May
Oakdale Duathlon – Typical early season rust-buster, but probably wouldn’t be doing this race if I didn’t need to go Kansas the next week. My 7th time here makes this my most frequented race....
Gear West Duathlon - With Kansas in July instead of May, I'll probably race at Gear West instead. More fun than arguably any race in the state, so why not?
June
Liberty Long Course – The end of the short “Phase I” of my season. This will be my second half-iron distance race, but the first was characterized primarily by jellyfish stings, heat exhaustion, and delirium. This one will be better.
July
5150 Kansas – Heading to Lawrence specifically to qualify for the 5150 Championships at Hy-Vee later in the year. I won’t be in peak form but only need to be top 15 here. [Last year, this race was in May. I assumed it would be again, and you know what they say about assumptions. Turns out its in July this year, on the same weekend as Duathlon Nationals. I was really only racing DuNats because it was in Minnesota, but now I'll be in Kansas instead]
Chisago Sprint – This is becoming a recent staple for me. Basically a tune-up for Nationals.
August
Age Group Nationals – Another fortuitous judgment of the geographical nature. For the second consecutive year, Nationals will be in Milwaukee. I like Milwaukee. This will (finally) be my first crack at this race.
Lake Marion Olympic – Tough to turn down a race a mile from my house. This will be number 5, after finishing 6-2-1-2 the last four years.
Hy-Vee 5150 – My first true “A” race of the year. I hope to go fast.
September/October
Nope
November
Ironman Florida – My other “A” race. My first Ironman is going down on November 1st. This was kind of a last minute decision but I’m fully committed now.
