Here are MTN we like to write about interesting people that we like a lot. The problem is that triathletes are inherently cool, thus we are doomed to like almost all of them.
So how do we choose who we write about?
We categorize. Today, we are selecting our subject from the "Favorite Guys With Male Pattern Baldness" category.
Because there are so many great candidates in this group, we were forced to sub-categorize. Thus, we decided to select a guy from the "Bald Triathletes Who Reside in Richfield, Have Bunions and Who Have Won at Least Six Races Between 2009 and 2011" category....
We were able to find one guy in this elite group: Steve Sander.
We love this guy! He's simply a great human being. He loves people and smiles all the time. He has a fantastic sense of humor and owns and occasionally wears really garish Christmas sweaters. He has a totally lovely wife (Kelly) and a remarkable daughter (Avery), who was recently inducted into the "Richfield Toddler Hall of Fame," which honors kids that are really smart and cute and well-behaved and who always wear their helmets when they ride their tricycles. Avery looks especially adorable in her giraffe suit (photo R), don't you think?
Steve is almost multilingual. He is fluent in American and Spanglish, which means he can cuss in Spanish and competently order food (comida) and beer (cerveza) in a Mexican restaurant.
Steve has many, many friends, including the furry Ross Weinzierl, and he enjoys listening to the "Black Eyed Peas," though he claims that he's never had a fantasy that included Fergie. Right. He loves "The Simpsons" and believes that "Aliens" was probably the greatest movie ever made. He also believes that drinking a case of Bud Light and swimming is a bad idea.
And he is a really good sport for allowing us to tease him like this.
As most of us know, Steve is a tremendous triathlete with really muscular legs. A former winner of the Tri-Minnesota Series (2009), Steve has won at least six multis in his career and has reached the podium at least 17 times. Check out his impressivo competitivo (Splanglish) highlights:
