CINCO DU MAYO - Lots of cool stuff happened on Mother's Day eve at the Cinco races.
First let's mention the double dippers. Lisa Lendway (photo L with daughters Hadley and the other one) and Shelley Ostrander became the first women to have won both the long and the short course duathlons. Lisa won the long course du this year and the sprint du, in record time, no less, last year. Ostrander, who won this year's sprint, won the longer race in 2014.
For Lisa, it was her 9th career multisport win. For Shelley, it was her 4th.
Ostrander's Winner's Circle companion on Saturday was two-time Junior of the Year nominee Mitchell Clayton, whose mom hates it when people call him Mitch. Mitchell is cool with either. Clayton, 19, has raced twice already this season and had won both times. Last week he was victorious at the Morris Tinman. FYI, he placed 3rd here in 2015. ...
Earlier this year Lisa Lendway and Brad Mitchell predicted that Mitchell would win the JOY this year. Both are known to be occasionally clairvoyant.
Wade Cruser came into the long course race hoping to challenge the course record, and while he did win, and by the second largest margin (6:26!) in the race's nine-year history, his time--1:24:23--turned out to be the 4th fastest ever. Only Sam Janicki, Devon Palmer and Dan Arlandson have gone faster. Those guys are total studs. And so is Wade. He's barkin' with the big dogs now.
Wade has sent us an awesome race report that we will post on Wednesday. Don't miss it.
Next, Robert Huang lost his multisport virginity at Cinco. His first effort yielded an 8th place overall finish in the sprint race. Some may assume that the guy possesses an aptitude for the sport. Robert, himself, credits his success to the ""Lucky" number belt the sales guy at Tri Fitness talked him into buying on the eve of the race. We suspect that both factors--aptitude and talisman--contributed to his outstanding performance.
Approximately 150 athletes participated at scenic, breezy Square Lake last Saturday. RESULTS
