Tinman 2026: Local racing is alive and well!

By Spencer Syvertson

The Tinman tri has always been my favorite rust-buster event to start the year. This time I received a message from stud-triathlete Micah Warning asking if it was worth the trip to Morris. I told him to come on up and I’ll bring my A-game to give him a battle. We both used this as a practice race before our key 70.3 events later on this season.

On the pool deck we lined up for the 1,100yd swim. I must have missed the message to wear my wetsuit because I was surrounded by athletes in full neoprene. Anyways, the swim went as expected around 1:15 pace. I hustled through T1 and was able to start the bike in the lead. If I had any chance to make my mark on the race it was going to be on the bike. I held myself together on the bumpy pavement and dodged the stray dog in the middle of the highway. I even pushed a personal best power but was still caught by Micah with a handful of miles to go.

Out of T2 together, I knew we were minutes ahead of the course record pace. At this point it was a solo mission for me. Micah pulled away from the start of the run and I focused on running a consistent 10k. Going into the race I wanted to hit sub 6 minute pace for the first time. By the halfway mark it was clear that I was...

going to settle for 6:05 mile splits. I still had a few miles to go but all I could think about was wanting to get back to training so I could improve my run.

I crossed the line in 2nd place, and 7 minutes faster than the last time I did this course in 2023. Hats off to Micah for the win and an impressive bike ride! I have a feeling the two of us will represent Minnesota well at the Michigan 70.3 in September!

Next up: finish my new bike build and race the Buffalo tri!
