The Minnesota Multisport Honor (MMH) for Triathlete of the Year (TOY) aims to honor Minnesota’s top-tier triathletes. To be nominated, an athlete must have completed three or more outstanding performances this past season. The MMH selectors – Bonnie and I – scrutinize the resume of dozens of athletes and consider them for TOY based on their season-long body of work (not their perceived ability or reputation), as well as how they stack up against historical standards (i.e., those set by the likes of Matt Payne on the men’s side and Heather Lendway on the women's side). So, without further rambling, here are the three guys that earned a Triathlete of the Year nomination in 2025: ...
Josh Blankenheim, Duluth:
Josh kicked off his year with a 2nd place finish at Buzz Ryan, only bested by fellow TOY nominee Spencer Syvertson. He then went on to set a course record at the storied Brewhouse Olympic in a time of 1:49:39 on the .75 – 24 – 5 mile course. He wrapped up his season with a win at Lakes Country, securing his 20th career multisport win.
Nathan Kim, Minneapolis:
Nathan, sadly, did not race in-state this year, but he did excel at every out-state competition he started. At St. Anthony’s Olympic (Florida) he popped a stellar 1:53:26, finishing in 2nd place overall. He was 3rd / 1st amateur at the Clear Lake Olympic triathlon-turned-duathlon (which removed his biggest strength, the swim). He set a 70.3 PR of 4:06:38 at Des Moines, placing 3rd overall. He then went on to place 4th overall at Muskoka 70.3 (Canada) before heading to Madison 70.3, where he placed 2nd overall, again setting a new PR of 4:05:48.
Spencer Syvertson, Alexandria:
Spencer loves to race, toeing the line eight (!) times in 2025. He won his first six races of the year, which included a course record of 57:01 at Northwoods. He then placed 2nd overall at Maple Grove Olympic behind pro-level athlete Tyler Tanko of Sherwood, WI. Spencer finished his 2025 campaign with a 70.3 PR of 4:16:56 at Madison 70.3, which was good enough for 6th overall.
