Apple Multisport Festival

In 2024, Apple Duathlon celebrates its 42nd year as part of the all-new and expanded Apple Multisport Festival! The festival includes four events participants can choose from:

    • Apple Duathlon — Run/Bike/Run as an individual or 2- or 3-person relay team

    • Apple Indoor/Outdoor Triathlon — Pool Swim/Outdoor Bike & Run as an individual or 2- or 3-person relay team

    • Apple Relay Marathon — Run as 2- or 4-person relay teams, in half or full marathon distances

    • Apple Cycling Team Time Trial — Bike in teams of 2, 4, or 5, with each team member cycling 20 miles

With a change in venue, new events, and several team options, the vision of the Apple Multisport Festival is to revive the duathlon community by welcoming triathletes, runners, and cyclists to take part in this legacy event. As one of few early season multisport opportunities, Apple Multisport Festival makes it easy to kick off the 2024 season. Be Active, Central Minnesota!

Participants will receive a colored wristband to designate their race distance. Only participants with a wristband will be allowed in the transition area and participant food tent.

Note for relay teams: Team captains must pick up packets for relay team members. Relay teams will only have one bib; thus, the relay team member that is crossing the finish line should be the one wearing the bib.

Apple Duathlon

Apple Indoor/Outdoor Triathlon

The Apple Indoor/Outdoor Triathlon is a brand new event being run in conjunction with the historic Apple Duathlon. This sprint distance event will start with an indoor pool swim and continue outdoors onto the Apple Duathlon bike and run course. Sign up as an individual triathlon participant, a two-person triathlon relay team, or a three-person triathlon relay team. See the Apple Indoor/Outdoor Triathlon tab for more details.

 

Apple Relay Marathon

Want a Ragnar-type experience without having to sleep in a van?! The Apple Relay Marathon can be completed in teams of 2 or 4 people. With the option of half marathon distance (13.1 miles) or marathon distance (26.2 miles), the event will be broken down into 5k’s that can be completed as your team desires. For each team, one separate support person will be required. That person will transport gear and teammates to your 5k checkpoint locations throughout the course. (Support person does not have a registration fee.) Select your distance and sign up as a two-person or four-person relay team! See the Apple Relay Marathon tab for more details.

 

Apple Cycling Team Time Trial

The Apple Cycling Team Time Trial is a relay-style event consisting of teams of 2 cyclists (40 miles total), 4 cyclists (80 miles total), or 5 cyclists (100 miles total or relay “Century”). Any style of bike (excluding electric) can be used and each team member will complete 1 lap of the 20-mile Apple Bike Course. Sign up as a two-person, four-person, or five-person relay team. Apple Duathlon

Sartell historic Apple Duathlon continues in 2024 for its 42nd year! For logistical reasons, the event venue has been moved to the new Sartell High School. Also, please note that only one distance is being offered this year.

Mandatory Pre-Race Meeting

All participants are required to attend the duathlon pre-race briefing at 8:30 a.m. on race day at the event location. We encourage racers to read through all the following rules and FAQs.

 

USAT Qualifier

Note that Apple Duathlon is no longer a USAT Sanctioned event. For more information on qualifications for regional, national, and world events, visit teamusa.org.

 

Body Marking

Participants are responsible for body marking. Using a permanent black marker (provided at Body Marking Station), the participant’s bib number needs to be written on the participant’s upper arms and calves. If the participant is given a heat/wave number, it should be written on the participant’s left hand.

 

Relay Chip Exchange

For relay teams, timing chips should be exchanged between runners and bikers in the Transition Area. The bike must be on the rack during the chip exchange. There will not be a designated area for relay teams in the Duathlon Transition Area – teams are free to select any area that is available.

 

Transition Area

Due to the multiple event format, our transition area will open at 6:00 a.m. and remain open until the last event starts at 9am. Each event (duathlon, triathlon, relay marathon, team time trial) will have its own designated portion of Transition. Please keep to the portion of Transition that corresponds with your event. Do not enter parts of transition that are designated to other events.

No family members or non-racers may accompany participants into the Transition Area. Only participants wearing a wristband, which will be acquired during registration/packet pickup, may enter the Transition Area. (Sorry, no exceptions!)

We ask that participants step outside of the Transition Area after setting up their bike. If you are a relay teammate awaiting your exchange, please stay clear of other racers moving through transition and only come into transition when you are within minutes of making your exchange.

Please be aware of the timing chutes and chip mats! Do not cross over these mats or go near them with race chips while in the middle of a race.

The transition area will re-open at 11:00 a.m. for participants to gather their gear. Please continue to be aware that other events will be ongoing at this time. Quickly clear out of transition and only visit the parts of the Transition Area that correspond with your event.

 

Equipment Requirements

The wristband provided at check in must be worn.

All participants must wear a helmet. Under no circumstances will anyone be allowed to race without a helmet. Helmets sold by a bike shop will comply with certification requirements. The helmet must be properly placed and fastened before participants first mount their bicycles; and the helmet must remain fastened until the participant has dismounted.

Passing

There will be ample room along the course for safe passing. Be sure to safely move away from other participants to provide space during passing.

Before passing anyone, racers should make sure to loudly yell to the person they are passing, “passing on your left!”

 

Bike Support

There will not be a mechanic available. A few basic bike tools will be located in the transition area by the water table.

 

Sag Wagon

There will be support on the course to transport stragglers back to the Transition Area. Participants should recognize that the sag wagon may not be able to reach everyone promptly, depending on the number of bicyclists needing assistance. Please be patient, as our sag support crew gets to participants as soon as they can. The sag wagon cannot provide bike repairs support.

The wagon will transport those racers needing repairs back to the transition area.

 

Water Stops

There will be water in the transition area, and there will be water/Powerade stands at two locations on the run course: at Mile 1 and at Mile 2. There will not be a water station on the bike course.

We will have trash bins along the route. Please try to discard water cups and other trash into the recycling bin. Our volunteers will assist in cleaning up.

 

Restrooms

Restrooms available for use are located inside of Sartell High School.

There will be a portable toilet at the halfway point of the run course. There will be no portable toilets on the bike course.

 

Headphones/Music

Headphones/earbuds are allowed for the run. However, for safety, headphones are not allowed on the bike. We ask that participants be safe, courteous, and aware of other runners if they choose to use headphones on the run course.

 

Post-Race Participant Food

To ensure all participants can enjoy food and refreshments, only registered participants with a wristband will be served at the participant food tent/table. Spectators are encouraged to bring off-site food with them to the event.

Nautical Bowls will be present with superfood bowls available for purchase by both participants and spectators.

 

Post Race

Participants are encouraged to grab a water bottle and quickly leave the finish line area. The transition area opens at 11:00am for participants to gather their gear.

Please be respectful of others racing when inside of the transition area. Participants should do their best to leave the transition area as quickly as possible to limit the number of individuals inside of the transition area at one time.

The Apple Indoor/Outdoor Triathlon is a brand new event being run in conjunction with the historic Apple Duathlon. Apple Relay Marathon

Brought to you by the same team that manages the Earth Day Run, this course will take you and your team on a scenic tour of Sartell, Sauk Rapids, and St Cloud. For each team, one separate support person will be required. That person will transport gear and teammates to your 5k checkpoint locations throughout the course. (Support person does not have a registration fee.)

Date: May 19, 2024
Start Time: 7:00 a.m. (mass start)
Location: Sartell High School (3101 Pine Cone Road North, Sartell, MN)
Distances: Half marathon (13.1 miles) or marathon (26.2 miles), broken down into 5Ks that can be completed as your team desires in a Ragnar-style format
Awards: Timed event but no awards or divisions.
Teams: Relay teams of two or four people.
Course Support: Teams are self supporting and supply their own water and support. This is an open course that will be marked directionally, but there will be no traffic control, aid stations, or volunteers. Runners and support vehicles will need to abide by normal traffic laws and are in charge of their own safety.

The Apple Relay Marathon will consist of a 13.1 or 26.2-mile course, with relay teams running 5Ks in a Ragnar-style format.

Start and Finish location

The Start/Finish Line will be located on the west side (back entrance) of the school. Each team’s starting relay member should be to the Start Line arch at least 10 minutes prior to the event start time. As the event continues, the support person will transport other member(s) of the team to designated exchange locations.

 

Support Team Member

Each team is required to have a Support Team Member in addition to the running team members. Support Team Members must be over 18 years of age and be licensed to drive in Minnesota. This person’s job is to support the team and cannot also be one of the racing members. There is no fee for this person. Personal vehicles/gasoline must be used as vehicles will not be provided by ACM. Support team member’s jobs are: driver, food/water carrier, runner carrier. If the support team member would like to purchase an Apple Multisport Festival finisher’s t-shirt, that option will be available at team checkout. (Support Person Shirt not included in standard registration.)

Bike Course Information

Participants are to mount/dismount their bike in the designated areas outside of the transition area.

It is critical for bikers to stay to the far right and NOT ride two or more abreast at any time, except when passing.

Drafting is prohibited.

This bike course is an open course, meaning that participants must share the roadway with vehicle traffic.

Every turn will have: 1) A large upright arrow indicating the direction of the turn. 2) Arrows painted on the road surface to indicate the turn. 3) Orange safety cones to follow.

Participants are responsible for their own safety and bike at their own risk.

FAQs

Weather

The events of Apple Multisport Festival are rain or shine sports, and the races will not be rescheduled due to inclement weather. In the event of severe weather, all attempts will be made to delay the race rather than cancel any portion of it.

Note that weather conditions can change rapidly. We recommend participants prepare for both best- and worst-case scenarios when selecting clothing for the race.

Any weather-related delays will be reported on the Active Central MN Facebook page in the event they occur.

 

Safety

The health and safety of event participants is most important.

Participants should show up for these events healthy, fit, and prepared. They should consult with a doctor about any warning signs during training such as chest pain, shortness of breath, light-headedness, or blacking out.

Participants taking part in the pool swim should practice and prepare adequately; race day should not be a participant’s first exposure to swimming. All participants should make certain their equipment is safe and operable, their gear fit properly, and their bikes (if applies) are checked and in good shape before the event.

During the event, stop at the first sign of a medical problem such as chest pain, breathing difficulties, light-headedness, or unusually high heart rate and seek medical attention. During the race, participants should tend to a fellow athlete if they notice signs of trouble or medical emergencies.

 

Medical Emergencies

If you need medical assistance, from band-aids and ice packs to medical emergencies, staff will be on hand to help. A medical staff person from Williams Integracare will be in a red tent near the finish line that is clearly marked with a teardrop banner. Discounts

For first responder (fire, police, paramedic), military (active, veteran), or youth discounts (age 18 and under), please contact: heather.corcoran@activecentralmn.org (Proof required at packet pickup.) Only one discount is allowed per registration. No stacking discounts please..

 

Deferments, Refunds, & Transfers

  • Deferments of registrations must be made by April 19 (30 days before the event). All deferments must remain in the same calendar year of registration.
  • Refunds are only issued in the case where Active Central Minnesota has made an error. In all other cases, registrations can be deferred or transferred (within their proper window) but not refunded.
  • Registration transfers are granted on a case by case basis. Not all requests will be granted. Requests for registration transfers must be completed by May 5 (14 days before the event). If granted, new participants will not have an option to change the shirt size that was originally selected.

Spectators

Spectators are welcome at this event. You may park in regular participant parking. Dogs are welcome outdoors and must remain leashed. Dogs are not allowed in the school building. Please stay off the course during the event. Spectators are not allowed in the Transition Area. Outside food and coolers are welcome; food and beverages at the post-race refreshment tent are for athletes only.
