A Great Book & a Cool Scientific Study...

melanie-book.gifED. MELANIE is one of our region's tri/du pioneers. We've known of her for more than three decades and met and instantly befriended her in 1998. We love her to pieces. She's won a ton of tris and dus in Minnesota and is well known and liked by our state's multisport veterans. We've just finished reading her book, and it's wonderful. We recommend it with ever fiber of our being.

emma-run.gif-KINSIOLGY STUDY - Emma Lee (photo L), a graduate student in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota, is looking for participants for a research study.

The study will evaluate the effects of foam rolling on soreness, performance, and inflammation after a downhill running bout.  Participants will come in for seven visits.  The first visit will involve VO2max and body composition testing and an orientation to foam rolling and downhill running on a treadmill.  During the other visits, subjects will complete downhill running exercises, treadmill running economy tests, 3 km time trials, and foam rolling.  Blood will be drawn for assessment of markers of muscle damage and inflammation at these visits as well.  During the running tests, respiratory gases, heart rate, and perceived exertion will be measured.  Subjects will receive $20 for each visit completed for a total of $140.

To participate in this study, you must be between the ages of 18 and 40 and have run over 30 miles per week for the past three months.  You must not take anti-inflammatory medications more than once per week, and you must not foam roll more than once per week.  If you are a female, you must not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the course of the study.
