Tiger Nuts? And Other Weird Stuff...

Which trendy foods are actually worth incorporating into your diet?

Each time I pick up a magazine, scour the Internet or check social media, there is a new food “trend” that catches my eye. Being a sports dietitian, I feel the need to research all of them and try only the ones that make sense—and sound delicious! I wanted to start 2016 by helping you decipher some of the current food trends.

Turmeric

This curry-like spice comes from the root of the curcuma longa plant. It has been used for thousands of years throughout China and India as a spice and yellow colorant in foods as well as to treat infections, inflammation and digestive issues. Research suggests that the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, lowers levels of two inflammatory enzymes and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Turmeric may also help improve inflammatory...

Why Matt, Not Sean...

Mattcrop.pngToday we're going to talk about one of the more controversial MMA selections: Men's Performance of the Year

At Tri Night, Matthew Payne did not expect to receive the POY. At the podium, he admitted that he had expected Sean Cooley to take home the prize for his course record 4:04:21 at Superior Man. Several others were confused, perhaps shocked, by the selection.

Why then did Matt Payne's CR at Buffalo Olympic receive the award? Before we start to explain, know that some of the selectors did favor Cooley.

- First of all, Buffalo Olympic's men's field was perceived to be deeper than SM's. It featured four of the top 5 men on Team Minnesota, plus Corey Towle, who came very close to making the team. By comparison, only two--Payne and Andy Wiberg--Team Minnesota men, other than Cooley, raced at Superior Man. Still, as was said on Election Night, the POY race between Matt and Sean was too close to call...

What Ironman Means to Me...

SLOGAN.pngBy Erin Sontowski (bikesandcatsrightmeow.blogspot.com)

A few short weeks ago I was a spectator at the epic IRONMAN race that took place in Madison, WI on September 11th. It was my first experience being up close and personal at an Ironman branded full race. I even went the extra mile and spent a few hours of the day volunteering in the sunscreen station. Which, surprisingly, was a great place to be at! I got to see all the people off the bike into their run. Plus, they started using spray sunscreen this year, so I didn't even have to rub lotion on the many strangers that came through! Which, honestly, with the amount of beautiful and toned people I saw, wouldn't have been that bad. ;)

But, in all reality that experience was incredibly emotional, and it was a very important weekend for me as a fellow triathlete. While I wasn't there competing, I still experienced this unbelievable energy that I don't even think I can describe in words, but it was absolutely life changing. I have always known that someday I wanted to attempt to complete an IRONMAN, but after this...

Hopkins Royal Report - It was a dark and stormy morning…

which after a 45 minute delay, turned out to be a great, albeit HOT, race day! The root beer was flowing post-race, as finishers received bottle opener medals from the Hopkins Raspberry Festival Royalty and listened to music from the Starlifters, the US Air Force band from St. Louis, MO. Nearly 400 triathletes turned out for the 2nd annual Hopkins Royal Triathlon at Shady Oak beach on Saturday, September 5th. The event featured a newbies mini-sprint field of about 100 people from ages 10-85. The intriguing difference about this mini-sprint race is that the participants get to pick their distance for each segment on race day. Only a handful opted for the longer swim, and a few dozen did the long bike ride,...
