JA Race Report: Ironman 70.3 World Championship

By Joe Adriaens (triad. triadriaens.com)

I qualified for this race back in June at Madison 70.3.  With that being said, I was super pumped for this race!  I get the opportunity to race against the best 70.3 athletes in the world, what an honor!  Based on this race being on US soil, Emma and I decided that I had to do it.  It caused quite a bit of race shifting (ultimately moving my full ironman scheduled in the fall from Louisville to Florida), but more on that later.

Lead Up

Emma and I decided to get into Chattanooga a few days early as we were road tripping there.  We left on Wednesday morning to break up the drive over two days and arrived in Chattanooga on Thursday afternoon.

Emma and I both brought I trainers with in order to get the last key bike session in at the hotel on Wednesday night.  No rest for the wicked!

For destination races in the future, I don't think we will be driving.  I had a pretty stiff back and legs all week leading to race day. At any rate, I got checked in and we settled back in the hotel....

Do you know how many women finished the sprint version of that race? 696. The YWCA Women’s tri had 935 women finish the race. "A Dream Come True..."

Boulder-IM6.gifBy Kristin Gustafson

Ironman Boulder is in the books and it was quite a day! I just love race weekend as it is filled with nerves and excitement. My husband and I thought Boulder would be a perfect race to complete our second Ironman together as we lived out in Colorado for about 5 years after we graduated college. The scenery was gorgeous, the venue was perfect, and the volunteers were amazing.

We decided to drive into town pretty much right before the race. We couldn’t get there the two weeks to 10 days before to get use to the altitude like most athletes did. We were just hoping we could survive the altitude and dry heat. The weather was looking HOT for all of us on race day. I do pretty decent in the heat so I felt this could work to my advantage. It is always fun to go get checked in and go to the expo. I love to look at all the gear and just feel the excitement from all the other racers. It was an exhausting couple of days though with having to get checked in, bikes checked, and go to two different locations for the transitions. A lot of walking around which is never good a day before the race....

Lisa Must Have Said Something Naughty...

trinona-girls.gifTRINONA – Lisa Lendway just missed a spot on Team Minnesota last year. This season, though, she’s emerged as one of our region’s brightest stars, winning three of the five races she’s entered thus far, two in CR times.

Lisa’s most recent triumphant happened last Sunday in lush Winona at Trinona VII. Winner of the Sprint race here in 2014, she was hoping for a podium in this year’s Olympic. A win was possible, but not assumed.

Gaby Bunten, who would finish 2nd, and pre-race favorite Suzie Fox, who grabbed 3rd, were the women to beat. In the end, Lendway would claim a 58-second margin of victory over Bunten....
